Who Is the Pirate Vane in ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3? (& Who Plays Him)

Season 3 of The Mandalorian started with many characters introduced into the storyline. Of course, while some of these Star Wars characters aren’t necessarily going to be incredibly important, they added their wrinkles to the ongoing developments of the storyline. One such character is Vane, who appears in the middle of the episode as the first character to antagonize Din Djarin. So, who is Vane in The Mandalorian?
Vane is a pirate that works for Pirate King Gorian Shard. He is one of the most trusted men working under Shard and is known to patrol the sector around Nevarro. Vane is seemingly quite familiar with Greef Karga and the people of Nevarro, as he and the other pirates previously worked with him.
At this point, we don’t know what Vane’s exact role in the series will be, but we do know that there’s a good reason to believe that he and the other pirates could play larger roles that will affect the storyline of Din Djarin and Grogu early in the season. After all, he and the pirates wouldn’t be introduced for any reason. So, with that said, let’s look at what we know about Vane in The Mandalorian.
Who Is Vane in The Mandalorian?
The Mandalorian season 3 started with many developments in the storyline of Din Djarin and Grogu. Now that Din’s mission to try to bring Grogu back to his people is now done, he now has a new mission in mind, and that is to find a way to redeem himself as a Mandalorian so that he would be welcomed back to the Children of the Watch as one of their own. As such, he decided to go on a mission to try to go to Mandalore, where he could redeem himself by bathing in the waters of the mines of Mandalore.
But before going to Mandalore, Din Djarin needed to return to Nevarro, where the entire storyline of The Mandalorian began. The reason for returning to this planet was made known during a meeting between Din and Greef Karga, who had become a successful magistrate for the people of Nevarro after helping the planet become a prosperous, peaceful, and thriving settlement.
Din wanted to meet up with Greef to find a way to bring back IG-11, the only droid he had ever trusted. The reason for wanting IG-11 back was that Mandalore was said to have become too uninhabitable for normal people to live in, and that was where a droid came in handy.
But while Din and Greef were still discussing the circumstances of the visit of the Mandalorian, pirates arrived to try to mess things up, as this was something that the magistrate needed to deal with first. This pirate was Vane. So, who is Vane in The Mandalorian?
As mentioned, Vane is a pirate, and hee is a Nikto pirate that patrols the area around Nevarro to engage in piracy. And Vane was a trusted underling working under Pirate King Gorian Shard.
What Is Vane’s Role in The Mandalorian?
In the middle portion of the first episode of The Mandalorian, we saw what Vane’s role was as he was the man that Pirate King Gorian Shard sent to Nevarro to talk things over with Greef. Vane was sent to harass the magistrate and force him to try to work with the pirates once more.
It was clear that Vane was already quite familiar with Greef because he said that they had worked together in the past and were hired by the magistrate to kill people and acquire certain assets back when Greef was still a man that had to do questionable things in life.
But because Greef was now a different person and had already helped Nevarro become a prosperous settlement where people could thrive and live in peace, he no longer wanted anything to do with Gorian Shard, Vane, and the other pirates. But Vane insisted they talk business inside a building that used to be a cantina but is now a respectable school.
Greef, however, wanted nothing to do with Vane, and that was when he threatened him by telling the pirate that Shard no longer had anything on him and the people of Nevarro. And that was why Din Djarin and Greef Karga brought down several pirates before sending Vane off to tell Shard they were no longer looking to do business with his group.
Of course, Vane didn’t want to let Din Djarin go without retribution, as he and the other pirates ambushed him while they were making their way out of Nevarro. Din managed to shoot down the starfighters that the pirates owned before turning his attention to Vane, who lured the Mandalorian to the flagship of the pirates captained by none other than the pirate king himself. However, Din Djarin escaped Gorian Shard’s cruiser by evading all its shots and entering hyperspace.
Considering that Vane survived that attack on Din Djarin, there’s a good chance that he will return sometime in the future, especially because Din and Grogu still have to return to Nevarro to work with the Anzellans to bring IG-11 back to its friendly self. And we might see another shootout between the pirate and the Mandalorian.
Who Plays Vane?
Vane is played by Marti Matulis, who isn’t a stranger to playing characters that require heavy makeup and props. He did a good job portraying Vane by showing a lot of different expressions under the heavy makeup and props he was wearing. In that regard, he was impressive as a Star Wars newcomer as he gave life to a character set to have more roles in the series in the future. And because The Mandalorian returned to the roots of Star Wars to focus more on costumes and makeup instead of CGI when portraying aliens, the fact that Matulis was able to play Vane masterfully is a testament to his acting abilities and the work of the crew behind his costume and makeup.
