Why Does Deadpool Hate Wolverine?

Deadpool is a very special character. He is unique in most aspects and although he tends to be exceptionally brutal and weird people out, he is still one of the most popular comic book characters in the world. His unique skills, stories and his special approach to life make Deadpool so special and so likable. Not everybody likes him though, and maybe he doesn’t like everyone. There is a theory about his relationship with the three-clawed adamantium X-Men. So why does Deadpool hate Wolverine?

Deadpool doesn’t hate Wolverine at all, despite popular opinion. In fact, they are best friends and their friendship is one of the most famous ones in Marvel’s universe. Deadpool hates the movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine because of the way he was portrayed there, but not Wolverine himself.

Let us explore how did Deadpool and Wolverine become friends and what are the likes of their relationship, so keep reading to find out all you wanted to know about why Deadpool really doesn’t hate Wolverine.

What is the relationship between Deadpool and Wolverine?

The actual nature of Deadpool’s and Wolverine’s relationship is an often debated topic. Fans keep discussing it around the Internet, especially since the cinematic version of the character expressed his disdain for Wolverine, while Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman keep augmenting the debate with their constant “feuds” that make us laugh every once in a while.

The two characters have several similarities between them. For one, they are both Canadian, but Wolverine keeps being the most popular Canadian superhero in front of Deadpool. They are, also, both mutants and remnants of the Weapon-X project, which is another quite firm connection between them. They also have one similar power – a healing factor that gives them night immortality – and have both been members of the X-Men.

Still, during a lot of their crossovers, Deadpool and Wolverine haven’t exactly been on friendly terms. Sometimes, they have been enemies (they even killed each other a couple of times), sometimes frenemies, and sometimes they would just get on each other’s nerves (well, Wolverine was more often annoyed with Wilson than vice versa, but okay). This resulted in a fairly turbulent relationship between the two, but generally – they have both shown a lot of respect for each other and their powers.

Yet, despite all of their similarities and their mutual respect, Wolverine and Deadpool are two completely opposite characters in the traditional sense. Wolverine is a loner. He has a dark and cynical personality, and although he is part of the X-Men, he prefers to do things on his own. He does have a sense of justice and loyalty, but that doesn’t really change his personality.

On the other hand, Deadpool can be quite annoying for an introvert like Wolverine. Deadpool is talkative, very open about his thoughts and his feelings, he is quirky and he’s just everywhere. He is a total extrovert and it’s completely understandable why Wolverine would be annoyed by him, as the image above suggests.

So, the exact nature of the relationship between Deadpool and Wolverine is quite complex. While they have a lot of similarities, some of which are quite important and due to which they usually work well as a team, they are two completely opposite personalities and defining their exact liaison is not easy. The best term would be frenemies, but the two do have a mutual respect for each other and they certainly don’t perceive one another as the enemy… well, in most cases at least.

Does Deadpool hate Wolverine?

Now we get to the more important question – does Deadpool hate Wolverine? And vice versa? Well, seeing how they are considered to be friends (although it’s a more one-sided affair than Deadpool’s friendship with Spider-Man, for example), they don’t really hate each other, so why do people think that?

Well, the main reason why people think that is because the cinematic version of Deadpool constantly mocks Wolverine and makes jokes about his movie roles, so people think that the Merc with a Mouth hates him. But that’s not true, actually. Deadpool loves Wolverine and both Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, the two actors that portray these two characters, love each other.

So, where does all the hate com from?

Well, Deadpool does hate Wolverine… but it’s not the character. It’s the movie, or rather – one specific movie: X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009). Namely, Deadpool made his debut in that movie, played by Ryan Reynolds, but that appearance was such a mess that everyone wanted to forget it as soon as possible. The later cinematic version of Deadpool had nothing to do with this miserable excuse of a character and it is quite natural that the “real” Deadpool hates that version from that movie. That is why he returned in time to kill off that version of himself and we’re all glad he did it.

So no, Deadpool doesn’t actually hate Wolverine. He hates his earlier version from a Wolverine movie, but he loves Logan. They’re (best) friends and there is absolutely nothing in the comic books or in the movies to substantiate the thesis that Deadpool hates Wolverine. Despite their differences and their different personalities, they are the best of frenemies and a pairing that Marvel can be proud of.
