Why Jack Black Says This Is the Greatest Score in Cinema History
Jack Black’s reputation as a high-octane rocker is well-established, rooted in a lifelong passion for heavy metal and the theatrical energy of a frontman. He has famously championed the works of legendary vocalists like Ronnie James Dio, whom he once described as the operatic pinnacle of the genre.
However, this deep-seated love for loud guitars and powerful vocals does not prevent him from appreciating the subtler, more unsettling side of classical arrangements and cinematic soundscapes. While many might expect his favorite scores to lean toward the aggressive rock of the eighties, Black has expressed a refined interest in the eerie and atmospheric.
When discussing the greatest musical backdrops in film history, he bypassed traditional favorites like John Williams’ Star Wars or Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti westerns. Instead, he highlighted the haunting work found in Stanley Kubrick’s final masterpiece, Eyes Wide Shut, which features a chilling blend of original compositions by Jocelyn Pook and classical pieces by Ligeti and Shostakovich.
Black noted that his cinematic taste often gravitates toward “creepy scores,” and he holds a particular reverence for the soundscapes that define Kubrick’s filmography. “All the Kubrick scores,” he remarked when expanding on his favorites, citing The Shining as another definitive example of the director’s musical brilliance.
While he acknowledges the greatness of more conventional, sweeping scores, he finds a unique artistic satisfaction in the unsettling, ritualistic music that accompanies Kubrick’s vision of a secret society. As of April, Black is currently riding a wave of massive commercial success following the release of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Reprising his role as the voice of Bowser, he has once again dominated the box office and the music charts with a new villainous anthem that follows in the footsteps of his viral hit “Peaches.” This sequel has further solidified his status as a king of family entertainment, with the film already crossing major milestones within its first two weeks in theaters.
Looking ahead, fans can expect to see Black in the third installment of the Jumanji franchise, which is slated for a December release. Whether he is lending his voice to a fire-breathing turtle or exploring the complexities of a Kubrickian score, Black continues to be one of the most versatile figures in the industry.
