‘Widow’s Bay’ Makes Emmy History, Topping ‘The Studio’ for the Most Comedy Wins Ever in a Single Season

Freshman shows rarely dominate awards season the way ‘Widow’s Bay’ just did. Apple TV’s slate of prestige comedies has been on an absolute tear over the past two years, with shows like ‘Ted Lasso,’ ‘The Bear,’ and ‘The Studio’ each pushing the boundaries of what a first-season comedy could accomplish on Emmy night.

That trend continued in a big way this year, and the competition for Outstanding Comedy Series was fierce from the jump. ‘Hacks’ entered the night with a record-setting 24 nominations in its fifth and final season, positioning itself as the sentimental favorite heading into the ceremony.

None of that mattered once the trophies started piling up. ‘Widow’s Bay’ swept through the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards with 14 total wins, officially breaking the record for the most Emmys ever won by a comedy series in a single season, a mark previously held by ‘The Studio’ with 13 wins last year.

Created by Katie Dippold, ‘Widow’s Bay’ follows a New England island community grappling with a centuries-old curse, blending horror and comedy in a way that clearly resonated with voters. The freshman season led all new shows with 19 nominations overall, and it ended up converting the vast majority of them into wins.

On the main telecast alone, the show took home six major awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actor for Matthew Rhys, and Outstanding Supporting Actor for Stephen Root and Outstanding Supporting Actress for Kate O’Flynn. Dippold also won for her writing, while Hiro Murai took the directing prize, making him the first Asian director to win an Emmy for comedy series directing.

Those six wins came on top of eight additional Emmys the show had already picked up the previous weekend at the Creative Arts ceremony, where Betty Gilpin won guest actress in a comedy series, and the show swept several technical categories, including casting, production design, cinematography, and sound. Combined, that gave ‘Widow’s Bay’ its record-breaking total of 14 wins from 19 nominations.

Rhys’s win carried its own bit of Emmy history. After previously winning Lead Actor in a Drama Series for ‘The Americans’ back in 2018, his victory for ‘Widow’s Bay’ put him in the rare company of performers who have won lead acting Emmys in both the comedy and drama categories, a list that includes Carroll O’Connor and Edie Falco.

Not every category broke in the show’s favor. Jean Smart still took home Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for ‘Hacks,’ preventing ‘Widow’s Bay’ from running the table entirely, even as it dominated the rest of the comedy field.

The win also extends a streak for Apple TV, which has now produced back-to-back record-breaking comedy series in consecutive years, following ‘The Studio’s’ 13-win haul in 2025 and ‘The Bear’s’ earlier 11-win record in 2024. With three straight years of Apple comedies rewriting the record books, the streaming service has quietly built one of the most dominant runs in modern Emmy history.

For a show built around a cursed island town, ‘Widow’s Bay’ certainly didn’t seem cursed on Emmy night. Between its record-setting trophy haul and Rhys’s historic acting win, the freshman series has cemented itself as one of the biggest breakout stories of the 2026 awards season.
