Awards season has a way of surprising even the most seasoned television watchers, and this year’s Television Critics Association gathering delivered exactly that kind of unpredictability. With so many buzzy freshman shows competing against established favorites, predicting the night’s biggest winners was never going to be simple.

The 42nd Annual TCA Awards, honoring standout achievements from the 2025-2026 television season, were announced Thursday, and the results reflected just how varied this year’s crop of prestige television actually was. From closeted hockey players falling for each other to a haunted seaside town, the nominees spanned nearly every corner of the medium.

When the dust settled, ‘Heated Rivalry’ claimed the night’s biggest prize, Program of the Year, edging out a competitive field that included ‘Industry,’ ‘Widow’s Bay,’ and ‘The Pitt.’ The HBO Max and Crave romance follows two closeted professional hockey players navigating their feelings for each other, and its win at the top of the ceremony marked a major moment for the sports drama.

Despite missing out on the top prize, ‘Widow’s Bay’ actually walked away with more total wins than any other program. The Apple TV horror comedy picked up three trophies across the evening, taking home Outstanding Achievement in Comedy, Outstanding New Program, and Individual Achievement in Comedy for star Kate O’Flynn.

That haul makes ‘Widow’s Bay’ the most decorated show of the ceremony, even without claiming the marquee award. Meanwhile, Rhea Seehorn took home Individual Achievement in Drama for her work on Apple TV’s ‘Pluribus,’ rounding out the night’s major acting honors.

‘The Pitt’ successfully defended its title in the drama category, winning Outstanding Achievement in Drama for the second consecutive year. Netflix’s ‘Death by Lightning’ took home Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries or Specials, adding another notable win for the streamer’s slate.

TCA President Andy Dehnart captured the range of this year’s honorees in a statement following the ceremony. “Creepy ghost stories, hot athlete romance, and a global hive mind all produced engaging television—and outstanding art,” Dehnart said. “With these awards, we continue our tradition of honoring the talented artists and craftspeople who bring entertainment into our homes.”

Beyond the scripted categories, the ceremony carved out space to celebrate a major farewell in late-night television. Stephen Colbert received the Career Achievement Award following the conclusion of ‘The Late Show’ on CBS earlier this year, while the show itself won Outstanding Achievement in Variety, Talk and Sketch for its final season.

The night also paid tribute to television history, with the sketch comedy series ‘In Living Color’ receiving the Heritage Award, an honor reserved for programs that left a lasting cultural and social impact on the medium. Other winners across the evening included ‘The American Revolution’ on PBS, ‘The Traitors’ on Peacock, ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ on Disney+, ‘Snoopy Presents: A Summer Musical’ on Apple TV, ‘Long Story Short’ on Netflix, and ‘Squid Game’ for Outstanding International Series.
