Will Ferrell Is Reportedly in Talks to Play ‘Inspector Gadget’ as Disney Revives the Classic Franchise
Few animated characters from the 1980s feel as ripe for a modern big-screen comeback as the bumbling, gadget-packed cyborg detective who became a fixture of childhood television. ‘Inspector Gadget’ is a French-Canadian-American animated comedy series that revolves around a clumsy, dim-witted detective with various bionic gadgets built into his body, whose nemesis is Dr. Claw, the sinister leader of an evil organization known as M.A.D. The show first premiered on September 12, 1983, with Don Adams voicing the titular character, and it quickly cemented itself as one of the most beloved cartoons of its generation.
The franchise has since expanded across animated series, video games, and films, with Disney holding the live-action film rights. Disney first brought the character to the big screen with Matthew Broderick stepping into the trenchcoat for the 1999 adaptation. That movie grossed $134 million at the box office, which fell short of Disney’s expectations, though it developed a cult following after its arrival on home video. In 2003, ‘Inspector Gadget 2’ was released directly to VHS and DVD, with French Stewart taking over the title role. It was received somewhat better by critics due to greater faithfulness to the source material, but overall reviews remained largely negative.
Now, more than two decades after that direct-to-video sequel, Disney appears ready to give the franchise a proper second chance. According to a report by movie scooper Daniel Richtman, Will Ferrell is in talks to play ‘Inspector Gadget’ in an all-new feature film, with Sean Anders attached to direct the reboot. Notably, Ferrell has not officially signed on to the project at this time, and the report has not been officially confirmed by Disney.
Anders is an American film director and screenwriter who co-wrote and directed ‘Daddy’s Home’, its sequel ‘Daddy’s Home 2’, the heartfelt comedy ‘Instant Family’, and the Apple TV musical ‘Spirited’. The pairing of Anders with this property makes immediate sense on paper, given his track record building crowd-pleasing family comedies. What makes the combination even more intriguing is that Ferrell and Anders have already worked together before, most notably on ‘Spirited’, giving the two an existing creative shorthand that could translate well to a character as physically demanding and comedically broad as the iconic inspector.
Ferrell himself has long been drawn to roles that blend absurdist physical comedy with genuine heart, and the bumbling, well-meaning Gadget seems almost engineered for his particular brand of performance. If the deal closes, he would become only the third actor to portray ‘Inspector Gadget’ in live-action, joining Broderick and Stewart in that very small club. Whether Disney intends a theatrical release or a Disney Plus debut remains unclear from current reporting, though the studio’s recent appetite for nostalgia-driven reboots suggests the property could land either way.
A previous attempt to revive the franchise was announced as far back as May 2015, with development on a rebooted version beginning at that time, though that particular project was eventually shelved. The fact that the project is now reportedly moving forward again, with actual talent attached, signals a more concrete level of momentum than the franchise has seen in years. For a character whose charm is deeply rooted in slapstick chaos and retrofuturistic invention, the real question isn’t whether a new ‘Inspector Gadget’ can work, but whether this specific creative team can crack what the previous attempts couldn’t.
Are you ready to see Will Ferrell going gadget in a Disney trenchcoat, or do you think someone else should have gotten the call?
