Will There Be a Season 2 of Netflix Anime Exception? Here’s What We Know

Share:

Netflix has long realized how popular and lucrative the Japanese anime market is. Hence, awesome anime shows arrived on the platform, and Netflix also started producing its original shows. One of those shows is Exception, an epic, futuristic anime series that premiered on the platform on October 13. But will there be a Season 2 of Exception on Netflix?

For now, there’s still no official confirmation about the renewal of Exception for a second season. However, seeing that the show already grew a solid fanbase and overall has good reviews, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if Netflix continued the project.

After all, the final episode of Season 2 ended in an ambiguous way, where the story is still pretty much open. It’ll be interesting to see what happens next, so let’s dig in and find out everything we can about Exception and the anime’s future on Netflix.

Exception Season 1 Synopsis Recap

For those who haven’t heard of the show or just didn’t get the chance to watch it so quickly, Exception is a brand new Netflix Original Anime revolving around a group of individuals in space on a futuristic mission to populate another planet. The official IMDb synopsis says:

“In the far future, humanity has been driven from Earth and forced to move its population to another galaxy. Members of a scouting team are sent to search for a planet suitable for terraforming.

The crew was created through a biological 3D printer, but a system malfunction causes one of the crew members, Lewis, to emerge in a deformed state. As Lewis turns on his fellow crew members Nina, Mack, Patty, and Oscar, a countdown to the end of the mission begins in the frightening darkness of the ship.”

The storyline is quite intriguing, as it appears unique and polarizing right from the get-go. Apart from the classic horror anime vibe, it tackles some deeper issues, such as morality. The animation is a bit odd at first but quite stunning and colorful as the show progresses.

The first season is open-ended, leaving space for a potential Season 2 to happen. Will it actually happen, though?

Will there be a Season 2 of Exception on Netflix?

So far, there hasn’t been a word out about an official renewal of Exception for a second season. However, that doesn’t mean the news won’t come out in the near future. Netflix hardly ever announces a second season before they gauge the success of the first season.

Even if the show ends up doing good with reviews, if it doesn’t hit a certain threshold that the platform had in mind in terms of viewership, they have no issues with canceling the show regardless of the reviews.

That being said, I believe that Netflix will renew Exception for a Season 2 – they are probably just waiting to see the results of Season 1 on a bit larger scale. It has only been a couple of days since the show premiered, after all.

The reviews are fairly solid, considering the unorthodox animation style and the horror/sci-fi genre, and it seems that there’s already a nice fanbase formed, so there’s no reason why the platform would decide to cancel Exception.

When will Season 2 of Exception arrive on Netflix?

As I’ve said earlier, it hasn’t yet even been officially confirmed that Exception will have a Season 2. So, it’s hard to say when it could potentially arrive on the platform. However, if Netflix confirms a second season is in production, I believe it won’t take more than a year from the announcement for the show to be completed.

I’m trying to keep the article spoiler free, so we won’t discuss what could happen in Season 2 in detail, as it would require me to reveal some major plot points from Season 1. So, let’s just say that the last episode had an ending that could potentially be the end of the show but left just enough alleys open to continue the story with a Season 2.

Overall, the show really got me hooked on the seat. I loved the whole narrative of the story and the vibe that only a good horror sci-fi in space can give you. However, the thing I liked the most was the questionable morals of the entire thing.

The clones are created to be the exact replicas of the originals – with the same thoughts, feelings, and personalities. However, they are only there to do the dirty work while the originals are sound asleep, waking to be awakened when the work is done.

The sole purpose of their existence is to create the future for their original counterparts. But isn’t the clone a person, too? Don’t they deserve life? They didn’t get to choose whether or not they wanted to be created.

It reminded me so much of another show that premiered this year called Severance, which has a similar premise, but on Earth. If you have a chance, I highly recommend you watch both shows, as they both have awesome qualities.
