The series was licensed for streaming in the United States by Crunchyroll, while Funimation simulcast the series as well. Yuri!!! on ICE was released on six Blu-Ray/DVD volumes in Japan. The first volume, containing the first two episodes, was released on December 30, 2016. The Japanese figure skater Yūri Katsuki made it to the Grand Prix final at the age of 23, where he met his great role model, the Russian Victor Nikiforov. But Yūri is in bad shape and ends up last in the overall standings. Soon after, a similar thing happens to him at the National Championship and other competitions, leaving him dejected and returning home for the first time in five years of study and training.
In his hometown of Hasetsu on the island of Kyūshū, he is warmly welcomed by family and friends – despite his defeats, he is a local celebrity – but he initially withdraws to his family’s bathhouse. Eventually, he regained courage and ran a program he copied from Victor Nikiforov in front of his childhood friend in the city’s ice rink.
But their daughters film him and upload the video to the internet, where this stunning replica of the famous Russian figure skater quickly went viral. Eventually, he sees Victor Nikiforov himself. Yūri had met him at the banquet after the Grand Prix, where they both got drunk and Victor fell in love with him. Yūri had forgotten the night, but now Victor comes to Hasetsu to train Yūri.
This one is thrilled to be coached by the one he has adored since childhood. But Victor is surprisingly strict, but also open-hearted. After Victor’s arrival, Yuri Plisetsky soon follows him. The 15-year-old won the World Youth Championship, hates Yūri for his failure at the Grand Prix final, and now wants to make a successful adult debut under Victor’s training – as he promised.
He demands this from Victor, who suggests a competition between the two athletes. In preparation under Victor’s guidance, both have to develop a new approach to figure skating – Yuri less aggressive, Yūri more passionate. Eventually, Yūri is able to excel in competition and Victor sticks to becoming just his coach. Together they work to make Yūri win the Grand Prix next season.
At the same time, they get closer. As the new season begins, Yūri makes a big announcement that he will aim for Grand Prix victory with the confidence that love has given him. After that, Yūri meets his friend Phichit from Thailand, with whom he studied together, and other acquaintances at the Cup of China.
