Zach Cregger Delivered the Biggest ‘Resident Evil’ Ever and Still Found the Experience Miserable
Adapting a beloved video game comes with a built-in audience and an equally built-in set of demands. Zach Cregger walked into that situation having never seen a ‘Resident Evil’ movie, armed mainly with a reputation for original horror built on ‘Barbarian’ and ‘Weapons’. The Zach Cregger Resident Evil experience, by his own account, turned out to be far less enjoyable than the results suggest.
By any commercial measure, the gamble worked. The film premiered in Los Angeles on September 15, 2026, before releasing on September 18, going on to gross $361 million against a $75 million budget and becoming the highest-grossing entry in the franchise.
The director’s own assessment is far less rosy. Speaking to A Shot Magazine, Cregger said the excitement he felt about taking the series in a new direction didn’t survive past the page, explaining that the thrill lasted only during the scriptwriting.
What followed was something he hadn’t anticipated. Cregger said he realized that all of that expectation, that cultural expectation, was actually really unpleasant for him. The problem, as he described it, was that the conversation stopped being about the film itself. The weight of what fans wanted, argued about, and demanded ended up attaching to the project in ways he found draining.
That makes his next move look like a deliberate reset. Cregger said he is very grateful that ‘The Flood’ is an original project that can be judged on its own merits, free of the franchise baggage.

None of this came out of nowhere. Cregger repeatedly told interviewers that his adaptation would be an entirely original story set within the game’s world rather than a retelling of existing material.
He was explicit about the boundaries he set. Cregger told Inverse the film exists outside the characters of the games, saying he wasn’t going to tell Leon’s story because fans already have that, while insisting it remains obedient to the lore.
His pitch to Entertainment Weekly was similar. He said viewers would watch it and think this is very Zach, adding that he respected the games enough to tell a story that leaves everything fans love intact.
The follow-up is already attracting serious attention. Announced at CinemaCon 2026 during the Warner Bros. panel, the science fiction thriller lands at New Line with an August 11, 2028 release date.

It also has a major star. Jennifer Lawrence boarded the project, with Amblin Entertainment producing alongside Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment, reuniting Cregger with the New Line team behind ‘Weapons’.
Despite the genre shift, he isn’t softening. Cregger has described ‘The Flood’ as his most disturbing film yet, a notable claim from someone who just made a zombie movie. The timeline is still early. He confirmed the project was casting and in soft prep, hoping to begin full preparation in February, with filming potentially starting in summer 2027.
Cregger’s run has been remarkable. ‘Barbarian’ arrived in 2022, ‘Weapons’ followed in 2025 and earned him Critics’ Choice and Writers Guild nominations for Best Original Screenplay, and ‘Resident Evil’ became the highest-rated video game adaptation released.

He has also stepped back where it made sense. A ‘Weapons’ prequel titled ‘Gladys’ is dated for September 8, 2028, but Cregger is not directing it. Whether he returns to Raccoon City remains open. He reportedly still has ideas for another ‘Resident Evil’ film, though no sequel has been confirmed, and his comments suggest he’s in no rush.
Do you think Zach Cregger should return to the Resident Evil franchise after his stressful experience?
