Zach Cregger’s ‘Resident Evil’ Is Tracking for the Franchise’s Biggest Opening Weekend Ever

Box office forecasts have generated real buzz throughout this fall movie season, and few upcoming releases are entering their opening weekend with quite as much momentum as this newly reimagined horror franchise entry. Between critical acclaim rarely seen for this particular property and genuine fan enthusiasm built up over months of promotion, all signs point toward a genuinely historic debut.

‘Resident Evil‘ has spent the past several months building anticipation through Zach Cregger’s reputation as one of horror’s most reliable current filmmakers, fresh off the success of both ‘Barbarian’ and his Oscar-winning film ‘Weapons.’ That pedigree, combined with the film’s now-confirmed status as the best-reviewed entry in the franchise’s 24-year history, has box office analysts predicting a genuinely record-breaking opening.

That projected figure would mark a genuinely significant milestone for the series. The previous seven ‘Resident Evil’ films have collectively grossed more than $1.2 billion worldwide, but 2010’s ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ has held the franchise’s domestic opening weekend record at just $26.6 million, a mark Cregger’s version appears set to shatter even under conservative projections.

Even in a more modest scenario where the domestic opening lands closer to $40 million, Deadline notes that would still represent a record start for the franchise. The film’s $80 million reported production budget is backed by a wide release across 3,000 locations, with preview screenings beginning at 2 p.m. Thursday ahead of the official opening.

Some industry trackers are forecasting an even bigger result. Global Box Office projections cited by Archyde suggest the film could actually debut between $120 million and $150 million worldwide, considerably higher than Deadline’s more conservative $80 million estimate, reflecting genuine uncertainty about just how far this particular opening could reach given the film’s unusually strong critical reception.

Much of that box office confidence stems directly from the film’s critical reception, which stands in sharp contrast to every previous entry in the series. Deadline specifically highlighted that ‘Resident Evil’ currently sits at 96 percent certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, a genuinely unprecedented result given that every previous installment in the franchise landed in rotten territory with critics.

That critical goodwill, paired with Cregger’s own devoted fanbase from his previous films, gives this release a dual appeal that’s rare for video game adaptations, drawing both dedicated franchise fans and cinephiles specifically excited about Cregger’s involvement. The film currently trails only slightly behind this summer’s ‘Mortal Kombat II’ in pre-release audience interest tracking, positioning it as one of the stronger genre releases of the entire fall season.

With international rollout continuing through October, including a Japan release on October 9 and additional markets in Thailand, the CIS region, and South Africa opening the following weekend, ‘Resident Evil’ still has considerable room to build on its opening numbers as it expands globally. For a franchise that’s spent over two decades searching for both critical respect and box office dominance simultaneously, this weekend looks poised to finally deliver both at once.
