Zachary Levi on Reprising His Role in the DCU & Gunn: “When You’re the Brother of the Guy Who Runs DC… You Get to Play Who You Want”
DCEU is on its final stretch as the primary cinematic universe for DC comic characters. With ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ marking the end of an era, a new era led by Gunn and Safran is set to take the reins. While DCEU enjoyed success with films like ‘Wonder Woman,’ ‘Aquaman,’ and the first ‘Shazam,’ it struggled with sequels and maintaining a cohesive storyline.
Despite the unexpected success of ‘Shazam’ in 2019, its sequel became one of the lowest-grossing DCEU films. However, it wasn’t due to Zachary Levi’s performance, widely acclaimed as a perfect fit for Shazam. Under Gunn’s guidance, some familiar faces, like Jason Momoa, are making the transition to the new cinematic universe, with Momoa rumored to portray Lobo instead of Aquaman. Sean Gunn is also moving from his role as Weasel in Suicide Squad to a more prominent position as Maxwell Lord in ‘Superman: Legacy’ and contributing to the ‘Creature Commandos’ animated project.
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Zachary Levi discussed DCEU, Gunn’s influence, and the possibility of reprising his role as Shazam. When asked about the likelihood of following in Momoa and Sean Gunn’s footsteps, Levi initially seemed puzzled by the question, his awareness seemingly limited.
When you’re the brother of the guy who runs DC, I guess you get to play who you want.
Levi isn’t the sole voice raising concerns about Gunn’s nepotism; he’s faced recent criticism on this front. Fans have noted that, aside from Maxwell Lord, his brother typically secures minor roles.
Regardless, it seems unlikely that Levi will reprise his role as Shazam or take on any other character. Have additional thoughts? Feel free to share them in the comments below!
