The ‘Spider-Man’ press circuit has officially entered its nostalgia era. With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ closing in on release, the cast has been doing plenty of reflecting lately, and this time the trip down memory lane turned personal for Zendaya.
Fans have long debated which entry in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy holds up best, and now the actress who plays MJ has weighed in with a surprisingly emotional answer of her own.
During a new interview, Zendaya named ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ as her favorite film of the original trilogy, and the account DiscussingFilm shared her reasoning straight from the conversation. She described the film as her go to comfort watch, saying it feels cozy and good every single time she revisits it.
The moment carried extra weight given that ‘Homecoming’ marked Zendaya’s feature film debut back in 2017, introducing audiences to her take on Michelle Jones before the character’s nickname MJ was even confirmed. The film also grossed over 800 million dollars worldwide, becoming one of the biggest Spider-Man releases at the time.
Zendaya was not alone in her nostalgia. Tom Holland and Jacob Batalon both agreed with her take on the film, with Holland adding that among superhero movies there really isn’t anything else quite like ‘Homecoming,’ calling it a genuinely unique entry in the genre. Batalon also fondly recalled the film’s now iconic hoodie Spider-Man scene, describing it as a classic moment from the movie.
The whole exchange reportedly kicked off when the cast read aloud a glowing fan review, with a Letterboxd user named Dawson Joyce describing the first film as a witty, charming, John Hughes style coming of age comedy that doubles as a colorful and well constructed superhero movie grounded more in character than spectacle.
The conversation lands at an interesting moment for the franchise. Jon Watts directed ‘Homecoming,’ whose success led to ‘Far From Home’ and ‘No Way Home,’ while directorial duties for the newest installment have been taken over by Destin Daniel Cretton. ‘Brand New Day’ follows Peter Parker after the events of ‘No Way Home,’ navigating a new chapter in a world that no longer remembers who he is while facing fresh villains.
