Welcome to the Ending Explained for Wellmania, a new Netflix comedy series that arrives on the streaming service this week. Benjamin Law and Brigid Delaney develop the series. Delaney is the source material’s author, a novel of the same title. The series is a mixture of comedy with a self-improvement philosophy. We follow the story of Liv, a food blogger who is about to have a huge life-changing level-up in her career. However, fate has different ideas and turns things upside down not only for Liv but also for her family and friends.

Wellmania seems to have very good intentions. The premise for the story is quite fun, and most of the cast does a good job of creating these quirky characters. However, the show has one big caveat: the main character, Liv, is not sympathetic. Even when the show is trying to have her go through a redemption type of arc, the characters can’t get past her annoying personality. Because of it, it is really hard to care about what could happen to her in the future, especially as the series leaves things open for a second season.

The following paragraphs contain spoilers for Wellmania, Season 1. Read at your own risk.

Why Is Liv Stuck In Australia?

As a show, Wellmania tries to be funny in ways that feel a bit on the raunchy side. There is nothing wrong with some toilet humor here and there, but it seems like the character of Liv is designed to be as disgusting and annoying as possible. It is hard to care about a character like that. Thus, the entirety of the show’s first season falls a bit flat in terms of comedy and the emotions that the series wants to convey, especially as the season comes to a close. There is a really great message here, but the execution is a bit lackluster.

The series introduces us to Liv, our main character, and it becomes clear from the first minutes of us watching her that Liv is a walking disaster. She is annoying, rude, and selfish, and she still hopes to land the position of judge on a new food TV show that is being developed. For all her faults, it seems that Liv is a great writer, which is why the production might want to have her as a judge. Liv is static for the opportunity. Her boss is also excited, and she believes audiences will love Liv because she is Australian and her accent makes her funny.

However, before the TV show begins production, Liv needs to travel back to her native Australia. There is an important family event happening, and she cannot miss it. Her brother Gaz is getting married. So, Liv travels back to Australia, and here is when her troubles begin. You see, Liv doesn’t like Australia. She is happy with her life in New York City. Her native country brings her bad memories of things that happened in the past. Things that she would soon forget, but seeing her family and her best friend, Amy, once again reignited these memories in her consciousness.

While out on the beach, Liv gets mugged. She doesn’t care much for the money in her bag, but because inside, she has her green card, she cannot go back to the US without it. Liv becomes furious and also quite a bit paranoid. Amy gets her an appointment at the consulate, but Liv’s poor attitude bites her back, and she is rejected. She also fails the medical exam to get a green card. Her poor health could be considered a burden for the US, and she won’t be accepted. Liv promises she will get her cholesterol and heart pressure to a normal state and nail the test.

Does Liv Manage To Go Back To The USA?

Things are not as easy as Liv expected. Getting in shape takes quite a bit of time and effort. She wants to do it as soon as possible, but she cannot really do it in the time frame she needs to. She visits spas and psychiatrists, and there are many more examples of how the wellness industry extracts money from people. Most of these efforts make the person believe they will get better in no time when the reality is the exact opposite. To get healthy and be able to do all the things you are supposed to do, takes time. Liv is not leaving Australia soon.

To be clear, not everything is Liv’s fault. I mean, it is clear that she is the source of her problems. Her attitude is so bad that she makes others feel bad about her. Nonetheless, her family and friends constantly dig into her past and present lives, creating deep anxiety and depression. Liv manages to get her health levels in order. At least enough to nail the medical test and get her green card back. She celebrates with her family and friends and even manages to go to Gaz’s wedding.

However, things take a turn for the worse when Liv decides it is time to return to the US. She faints during the wedding, so her health is still at risk. Her mother and brother don’t want to see her fly, but she becomes quite adamant about going. They get into a discussion, and everyone gets hurt. Gaz still manages to have an excellent wedding, but things don’t look good there for a while. Liv even reveals to her mother that she believes her dad died because of her. This creates a rupture between mother and daughter that won’t be easily repaired.
