For all of you who’ve enjoyed the series, in this article, we are going to tell you whether the Heavenly Delusion series is actually finished or if you can expect more content in the future.
Heavenly Delusion is a series consisting of two works – a manga series and an anime series – and both of these works are still ongoing and are not finished. The manga series has been ongoing since January 25, 2018, and has 8 volumes as of the time of writing, while the anime series has been ongoing since April 1, 2023; although a second season has not been confirmed, based on the series’ popularity, it is going to be. There is no foreseeable ending for any of these works as of the time of writing.
The rest of this article is going to focus on the publication of the Heavenly Delusion series and all its aspects. We will go over the whole publication history and ultimately tell you whether the Heavenly Delusion series is over or still ongoing so that you know how much material from this great series you can expect.
Is the Heavenly Delusion manga over?
Tengoku Daimakyo is written and illustrated by Masakazu Ishiguro. It has been serialized in Kodansha’s Seinen manga magazine Gekkan Afternoon since January 25, 2018. Kodansha has collected its chapters into eight tankōbon volumes as of April 2023, i.e., the time of writing this article. The first volume was published on July 23, 2018, along with a short promotional video directed by Tasuku Watanabe, which was likewise released on July 23, 2018, along with the publication of the volume itself. In North America, the series was licensed for English language release by the publisher Denpa. The first volume was published on December 31, 2019, and so far, six volumes have been published in English.
On November 22, 2022, an official guidebook to the series was also released. Alongside some basic and additional information about the series’ setting, story, and characters, the guidebook also contained an exclusive interview with the series’ author, Masakazu Ishiguro.
The series itself was quite well-received by both fans and critics alike. As of December 2018, the series has sold over 130,000 copies. The 2019 edition of Kono Manga ga Sugoi!, where manga and publishing industry professionals can voice their opinions on the industry and its works, named Heavenly Delusion as the best manga series of the year for male readers. Heavenly Delusion was one of the works recommended by the jury at the 24th and 25th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2021 and 2022, respectively. In December 2019, the Japanese Brutus magazine rated Heavenly Delusion on its “Most Dangerous Manga” list, which includes works with the most “challenging” and thought-provoking themes, which was a great honor in itself.
The overall structure of the manga series is quite simple in terms of publication, although the story is quite complex. The volumes are published in relatively regular 7-8-month intervals, although there have been issues that did not follow this pattern. The series has generally produced two volumes per year, with the exception of 2018 and 2021, where only one volume was published during the calendar year. As for the volumes, they are:
As of the time of writing this article, the Heavenly Delusion manga series is quite alive and well. There are no signs of cancelation, and while the story is slowly approaching its final arc, there is no news about any cancelation or the series reaching its end as of this moment, which means that there is still a lot more of the manga to enjoy.
Is the Heavenly Delusion anime over?
The anime adaptation is announced on October 18, 2022. Production I.G was announced as the main animation studio for the series, which was confirmed to be directed by Hirotaka Mori, with scripts written by Makoto Fukami, character designs handled by Utsushita from the Minakata laboratory and music composed by Kensuke Ushio.
The series has been airing since April 1, 2023 in Japan on Tokyo MX and other channels in Japan. The opening theme song, “Innocent Arrogance”, is performed by BiSH, while the ending theme song, “Daremo Karemo Dokomo Nanimo Shiranai,” is interpreted by ASOBI10. Disney Platform Distribution managed to obtain the streaming rights for the series, which is since then simulcasted on the Disney+ streaming platform. As for the structure of the series, it looks like this:
| No. | Title | Directed by | Written by | Storyboarded by | Original air date |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | “Heaven and Hell” Transcription: “Tengoku to Jigoku” (Japanese: 天国と地獄) | Hirotaka Mori | Makoto Fukami | Hirotaka Mori Tetsuya Takeuchi | April 1, 2023 |
| 2 | “TBC” Transcription: “Futari no Kokuhaku” (Japanese: 二人の告白) | Kai Shibata | Makoto Fukami | Itsuki Tsuchigami | April 8, 2023 |
Everything we’ve said about the manga above can be applied to the anime series as well. Although we haven’t received official confirmation of a second season of Heavenly Delusion (the first one is still ongoing), the popularity of the manga and the initial anime adaptations make it almost a certain thing, so we can confirm that the anime is not over either and that we are going to see more of the anime in the future. We just don’t know when.
