Brida became the face of the true Dane in The Last Kingdom despite being born a Saxon, although her inability to accept a compromise for the two communities to live together ruined her as a person. She grew to hate Saxons so much that she failed to notice the world changing around her, leaving her unprotected. Brida was seen just before the end of Seven Kings Must Die, which is why many wonder whether she really died after her fight with Uhtred in the show.

Brida became more radicalized after Sigtryggr chose to make peace with the Saxons rather than sacking Wessex as agreed with her. She went to Greenland with her daughter Vibeke, from where she returned with a slightly grown daughter whom she now believed to be a prophetess. She lost the battle against the Saxons as well as her daughter after attacking Sigtryggr’s settlement. She was later shot with an arrow by Stiorra after a fight with Uhtred and succumbed to the wounds.

Brida and Uhtred remain the best couple in The Last Kingdom, and even after their fallout, the two always found a way to make peace. While Uhtred may have betrayed his beliefs as a Dane, he never stopped loving Brida and always protected her. Brida and Uhtred becoming archenemies were one of the hardest rivalries for fans to understand, so let’s look at what exactly went wrong between the two and whether salvation was still possible for Brida.

Who is Brida in The Last Kingdom?

Brida was a young Saxon girl that was adopted and raised alongside Uhtred by the Dane warlord Ragnar after he sacked their village and killed their parents.

Brida grew close to Uhtredr and became his lover when the two were teenagers. After their adoptive father was killed, the two went to King Alfred of Wessex, seeking his help to get revenge for their father.

Unlike Uhtred, who swore his sword to Alfred for life, Brida hated the idea of becoming a Saxon slave and later left Uhtred when he chose to return to Alfred’s service.

After leaving Uhtred, Brida became Ragnar’s woman. Brida and Ragnar created the largest Dane army ever raised in England, but before they could defeat the Saxons, Cnut colluded with Aethelwold and killed him.

Brida accepted to become Cnut’s woman after Ragnar’s death but later killed him when she learned he was involved in Ragnar’s death.

She continued to hate Uhtred because he made the Saxons stronger. She also blamed Uhtred for Ragnar’s death, although he had no hand in it.

After killing the sorcerer that cursed her, Brida finally became pregnant with Cnut’s child, but she was betrayed again by her new ally Sigtryggr after attacking Wessex.

After swearing never to work with men again, Brida raised an army in Greenland and started attacking Saxon villages, starting with Eoforwic.

She also lost the battle and, having been left with no allies, went back to kill Uhtred as her final move to finding revenge, but she ended up dead.

In The Last Kingdom, Brida is portrayed by the Austrian actress Emily Cox, famous for her role as Emily in Jerks. She has starred in many British and European TV shows, although The Last Kingdom remains her biggest e project so far.

Brida’s relationship with Uhtred explained

Brida and Uhtred grew up as siblings and came to embrace the Danes because of their adoptive father Ragnar. They also loved the free-spirited nature of the Danes.

They became lovers while they were on the run after Uhtred was framed for killing his adoptive father, Ragnar, and all efforts to clear their names failed.

Working with the Saxons was their last hope after Uhtred was named The Dane Slayer, but it was supposed to be in exchange for Alfred’s help in retaking Bebbanburg and not a lifetime of slavery.

Brida had a miscarriage after becoming pregnant for the first time and continued to lose her children, apparently as a result of a sorcerer’s curse. She then lost patience with Uhtred after he refused to leave Alfred when he wouldn’t help him retake Bebbanburg.

Despite becoming Ragnar’s woman, Brida continued to love Uhtred and wouldn’t hurt him even when they were fighting on separate sides in wars.

Uhtred actually helped Brida kill Aethelwold after they discovered that he was the person that killed Ragnar and denied him the chance to enter Valhalla.

However, Brida never forgave Uhtred for abandoning Ragnar after they created the Great Army and chose to fight for Aethelflaed instead.

It was after Uhtred left that Ragnar was killed. Uhtred never betrayed Brida again, but Brida had a tough time after Ragnar’s death and continued to hate the Saxons even more, including Uhtred.

However, even when she came to kill Uhtred, she realized she couldn’t do it because she still loved him even after everything that happened over the years.

Who killed Brida in The Last Kingdom?

Uhtred’s daughter Stiora shoots the arrow that killed Brida after she fought with Uhtred but wouldn’t kill him. Stiora was angry with Brida because she had attacked her home when she returned from Greenland.

Despite believing in Dane gods just like Brida, Stiora respected Uhtred’s position as a bridge between Danes and Saxons and therefore disagreed with Brida’s radical beliefs.

Uhtred was still deeply hurt by Brida’s death, although he couldn’t do anything to Stiora because she was right and she was also his daughter.
