One Piece: Who Is Nico Robin’s Mom? Meet Nico Olvia!
Nico Robin is undoubtedly one of the most popular and interesting One Piece characters. She joined Luffy on his adventures later on, after being an enemy initially, but has since proven to be a beloved and irreplaceable member of the crew. She is a genius and knows a lot of important facts about the history of Oda’s world, but on top of that, she is also quite powerful. Now, in this article, we will talk about Nico Robin, but not about her directly. We will dig into her past to tell you a bit about her (as it is presumed) late mother, Nico Olvia, who played an important role in Robin’s life.
Nico Olvia is Nico Robin’s mother and was an archaeologist 22 years ago. Olvia was killed by Buster Call, along with all the other Ohara scientists. She was Oran’s younger sister, Roji’s sister-in-law, and Mizuira’s aunt. Nico Robin is her daughter, whom she had to leave to respect her ancestors’ duty and her late husband’s will when Robin was only two years old.
The rest of this article will be about Nico Olvia, her backstory, and her role in the world of Oda’s One Piece series. We will introduce you to her history and tell you what exactly happened to her, how she developed, and tell you where Nico Olvia is now, and what she is doing in the current narative of the manga. This article will contain some spoilers, so if you’re not fully up-to-date with everything, you have been warned.
Nico Olvia’s story is a complex and layered one, ultimately marked by tragedy
Nico Olvia is a normal human woman in terms of her fighting skills, and even with a rifle at the ready, she could not counter the two CP9 agents who were accompanying Spandine when he arrived on Ohara (see below). It was not easy for Olvia to leave her young daughter on Ohara, alone, but she was fully aware of her duties as a scholar of Ohara and her task of uncovering the true history, so she set out with a group of 33 other scholars to decipher the Ponegylph. She blames herself for the fact that she and her colleagues led the World Government to Ohara, which would ultimately destroy the island.
When Robin was two years old, Olvia left her to join a group of archaeologists to search and decipher the Poneglyph around the world. Olvia was just 27 years old at the time, and all of this happened not long after her husband had died; she did not want to leave her only daughter, but she felt an obligation towards her late husband and her calling, which is why she ultimately did it, albeit with a heavy heart.
Near the end of the sixth year of their journey, their ship was caught by the Marines, who captured them; her crewmembers tried to protect Olvia, but they were all killed by the Marines, save for her. She was taken to Jaguar D. Saul, who interrogated and imprisoned her but soon set her free and allowed her to flee as he was disgusted with what the World Government called Justice. Olvia thanked him but said she could never forgive him for what he and his men did to her friends and colleagues.

Four years later, Olvia returns home to Ohara and visits the library of the Tree of Knowledge, where she apologizes to her colleagues for pitting the Marines against Ohara but also receives an apology from them for sending her on such a dangerous mission. She returned home not long after Nico Robin had passed her exams as an archaeologist and met the giant Jaguar D. Saul, the same former Marine who captured and then helped her mother escape, on the coast. The two of them missed each other here by a few seconds.
Continuing their conversation, Olvia warned the scholars of Ohara that the World Government had gotten wind of their secret plan to uncover the true story, she could no longer prevent the World Government agents from uncovering the definitive evidence of the archaeologists’ machinations and that they have discovered how to read the Poneglyphs; this means that they have become too dangerous for the World Government, as those who can read the Poneglyphs could also be able to find and use the Ancient Weapons. The discussion is cut short once Olvia hears a Marine ship has landed on the island; she grabs a rifle and immediately leaves.

Outside, she met Spandine of the CP9, whom she shot in his jacket sleeve as a warning; but Spandine calmly told her that the World Government was here to destroy Ohara as a warning to all those who wish to research the Poneglyphs. She was soon knocked out and arrested, after which she was taken to the library to force confessions out of her colleagues: any association with Olvia would automatically mean their “guilt.”
Clover, the library head, finally reveals everything, and as Olvia is being taken away, she is confronted by Robin; after some persuasion, she finally admits to being her mother, but it is too late to change things, as Spandine had already ordered the Buster Call. This deadly military attack would soon wipe out all of Ohara.
After a brief reunion with her daughter after many years of absence, Olvia bids her farewell and stays with her colleagues herself to ensure the library’s book inventory is saved from the flames during the Buster Call. She pleaded with Saul to take Robin to safety, which is how Nico Robin survived, while she and the rest of the scholars are presumed to have died in the Marine attack that completely destroyed Ohara. And this is the story of Nico Olvia; she is presumably dead (although Oda might still surprise us), and while she was not the mother of the year, she did care about Nico Robin, making this story one of the best in the series overall.
