All Straw Hats’ Eye Colors Explained

All Straw Hats' Eye Colors Explained

If a Straw Hat crew member leaves the crew without Luffy’s permission, Luffy does his best to recruit them back. This is how things work among the Straw Hat Pirates, as they are one closely-connected pirate crew in One Piece. They are not a crew with many members, which probably explains why they are like a family. So far, Nami, Robin, and Usopp have left the crew at one point before returning. Additionally, Chopper and Sanji have been coerced by third parties to leave the crew despite their wishes, with Chopper returning soon afterward. The situation with Sanji lasted for around a week, but all of them are back together at this point, which is why we will talk about the crew in this article.

This article’s topic will be eye colors, i.e., the meanings of the eye colors of the members of the Straw Hat Pirates. We will go over each of the individual members, both current and former, and tell you their eye colors and a little bit about each of them so that you know the general story behind each character. This article will serve as your go-to guide for the full names of the Straw Hat Pirates.

Monkey D. Luffy – Black

As per the usual anime trope where the story’s protagonist is often designed with black eyes, Monkey D. Luffy, the story’s protagonist, has black eyes. Typically, this has no special meaning, which is really like that in Luffy’s case. He is the son of revolutionary Monkey D. Dragon and the grandson of Monkey D. Garp, a Navy Vice Admiral.

His big dream is to find One Piece, a legendary treasure, and thus become the pirate king. As a child, he ate the Hito-Hito no Mi fruit (model Nika) and therefore had a stretchy rubber body. At first glance, Luffy always appears lively, carefree, aimless, and inquisitive. But if he finds a goal, he never lets it out of sight and never gives up.

Nami – Brown

One Piece: Who Does Nami End Up With?

Nami’s eyes are brown in color (although the shading has changed a bit over the decades), and the usual trope related to brown eyes is that they are present in characters who are common, regular people with no special powers, which is true in Nami’s case. Brown-eyed characters also tend to be from various fields and occupations, which is why Nami fits the trope.

Nami, also known as “Cat Burglar” Nami, is the team’s navigator and cartographer. Nami is very spirited and loves nothing more than oranges and money. Her dream is to draw a perfect map of the world. After first using a simple wooden stick in battles, she later uses the Usopp-constructed climate baton, the components of which create special bubbles that release either heat, cold or electricity.

Zoro – Black or Silver/Grey/White

Zoro’s eyes were initially simply black, like Luffy’s, but in later episodes of the anime, they were colored grey-ish, which is why we could categorize him as a white-eyed character (as grey is not really a trope), which symbolizes freedom and solitude, both of which can be applied to Zoro. Zoro, also called “Pirate Hunter,” is a former bounty hunter and was the first to join Luffy.

His goal is to become the best swordsman in the world. To achieve this goal, he trains very hard to be able to defeat the current best swordsman, the samurai of the seas, Dracule “Hawkeye” Mihawk. He is the only known swordsman who fights with three swords simultaneously. Zoro is somewhat similar to his captain and values loyalty very highly. His weakness is his poor sense of direction.

Sanji – Black or Silver/Grey/White

Like Zoro, Sanji’s eyes have been black most of the time, but they received a white-ish color in the recent arcs, so we can only repeat everything we’ve said in Zoro’s example above. Sanji, also known as “Black Leg,” is the chef on Luffy’s ship. He has a weakness for beautiful women and will flirt with any pretty girl, often acting very childishly. To spare his hands, which are needed for cooking, Sanji only fights with his feet.

His big goal is to find the legendary All Blue – an ocean in which all the fish in the world are said to be found. Sanji also often argues with Zoro. Sanji was born into the notorious Vinsmoke soldier family of the Germa 66 kingdom. However, Sanji was cast out because he wasn’t strong enough for his father, and Sanji, for his part, didn’t want anything to do with these unscrupulous people.

Nico Robin – Blue

Nico Robin has been consistently portrayed with blue eyes in the series; these eyes usually signify an intelligent, calm, and analytical character, all of which can be clearly applied to Robin. Nico Robin is an archaeologist and the fourth oldest member of the crew. She ate from the Flora Flora fruit, which allowed her to grow parts of her body in any place she could see.

Her goal is to piece together the Rio Poneglyph, which is said to contain the truth about the real story. Because of her archaeological studies and the destruction of Ohara, she is the only person in the world who can read and decipher this Poneglyph.

Franky – Black or Silver/Grey/White

Franky’s case is special because he is a robot, but about his eyes – we can only repeat what we’ve said about Sanji and Zoro in the examples above. Franky, actually “Cutty” Framm is a cyborg and the ship’s carpenter for the Straw Hat Gang after they rescued him and Robin from the Enies Lobby. He dreams of building a ship that will take him around the world. This ship is said to be the Straw Hat Gang’s new ship, which the gang received as a thank you. For the dream ship to be able to do this, however, he accepted Luffy’s offer to join.

Usopp – Black

And while Usopp is definitely not a regular go-to character, he is “normal” in that aspect, so his consistently black eyes actually do make sense. Usopp, also known as “Sogeking,” is the crew’s marksman and weapons specialist and was the ship’s carpenter before Franky joined the gang. Usopp is the son of Yasopp, a member of Shank’s pirate gang, and Banchina. Often a coward, storyteller, and liar, he can sometimes be counted on in sticky situations. His goal is to become a brave warrior of the seas and later also the best marksman in the world.

Jinbei – Black or Silver/Grey/White

Also, a specific example, like Franky, Jinbei has been portrayed with black eyes that have sometimes been portrayed as white-ish in color, so there’s nothing to add here that we haven’t already said. Jinbei, also called “Knight of the Sea,” is a Fishman. He was a member of the sun pirate gang and then became captain of the Fishman pirate gang. He was also one of the Seven Samurai of the Seas.

He was imprisoned at Impel Down after refusing to fight Whitebeard and his alliance. During his stay at Impel Down, he befriended his former enemy Ace, with whom he shared the same cell. Jinbei and Ace have known each other before. They have dueled with each other in the past. He joined Luffy’s alliance and fought alongside Luffy in the Great Battle of Marineford, helping Luffy escape the battle alive and assisting him through his grief over the loss of Ace.

Brook – ???

Well, being a skeleton and all, Brook doesn’t have eyes, so we have nothing to say. Brook, also often called “Soul King,” is a living human skeleton and a Rumba pirate gang member. The fact that he is a living skeleton is thanks to the dead realm fruit, which allowed his soul to return to his body after his physical death.

However, his soul wandered around for too long, so his body decomposed in the meantime. Brooks’ trademark Afro is the musician’s dream to complete the journey he began with the Rumba Pirates and to see and tell the story of his friend, the giant whale La Boum, after more than 50 years. Brook is an exceptionally talented fencer.

Nefertari Vivi – Black/Dark Grey

Although the shades sometimes vary, Vivi’s eyes are either dark grey or black, which doesn’t necessarily fit the trope in her case, but does fit the fact that Oda prefers black eyes in his characters. Nefertari Vivi is a former member of the Straw Hats Pirates and the current princess of Arabasta. She is the daughter of Nefertari Cobta.

Tony Tony Chopper – Black

Like Jinbei, Chopper is not a regular character, so we can only confirm that his eyes are black, probably because Oda simply prefers this color. “Cotton Candy Lover” Chopper is a male reindeer who ate the human-human fruit, becoming a human reindeer. Chopper is the only known person who can power up their Devil Fruit with something called Rumble Balls.

He’s the ship’s doctor for the Straw Hats. He is very introverted, therefore shy, and has difficulty taking compliments, but he can talk to animals. Due to his naivety and enthusiasm for banal trifles and events, he often comes across as a little boy. Having become a human reindeer thanks to the Devil Fruit, Chopper can transform, giving him a unique fighting style.
