Minecraft: Here’s How Long It Takes for a Tree To Grow (& How To Speed It Up)
Trees are the most important source of wood in Minecraft, so it’s important to know everything there is to know about growing them. In this guide, we’re going to focus on trees in Minecraft and how to grow them most efficiently. Before we continue on to the more complex aspects of tree farming, let’s see how long it takes for a tree to grow in Minecraft.
Types of trees in Minecraft
There are eight types of trees in Minecraft. Depending on the biome you’re in, you can come across these types of trees: oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, azalea, and mangrove.
The easiest tree to find is by far the oak tree, as it can be found in almost every biome. A dark oak tree is also the most efficient tree to grow since it grows quickly.

In order for trees to grow, several conditions around your saplings need to be met:
- Make sure that you can ensure an appropriate level of light (at least 8)
- your saplings need to be planted on dirt blocks, moss blocks, or mud blocks.
- Your saplings need to have plenty of room to grow.
How do you grow a tree quickly in Minecraft?
You can grow a tree quickly in Minecraft by making sure it has appropriate conditions to grow, and by using bonemeal.
Every time a tree “attempts to grow” (and remember that it can be as much as one attempt per minute on average), it will check if the conditions of soil, light, and space are met. If those conditions are not met, the tree will skip this growth attempt, thus ensuring proper light levels, proper soil and proper space for a tree will result in more successful growth cycles. In this regard, tree farming functions just like any other crop farming.

Using bonemeal can also speed up the process of growing trees, it will not make your trees grow faster per se, it will only force a tree to “attempt growth” instantly.

Alternatively, if you need wood as fast as possible, you can plant dark oak saplings or birch trees as they grow faster in comparison to other trees.
Why are my trees not growing in Minecraft?
Most likely, some of the conditions that are needed for a tree to grow are not met. Your saplings either don’t have enough light or space or are planted on blocks on which they cannot grow.
You can technically grow trees everywhere, but only if you ensure the proper growth conditions.

And that would be all, remember your trees won’t grow at any rate at all if you’re not taking care of them properly. In order to grow trees the fastest, give them space, light, dirt, and maybe some bonemeal, you should have a forest in no time!
