Jujutsu Kaisen: Mei Mei & Gojo Are (Not) Related? Theories Explained!
Mei Mei is one of those Jujutsu Kaisen characters who draws attention to herself every time she makes an appearance. She is powerful, she is extravagant, and she knows how to make an entrance as well as an exit. While she is a secondary character with little screen time, her appearances are memorable, which is why she is one of the most popular secondary characters in the series. In this article, we are going to talk about Mei Mei’s past as we are going to explore the theories surrounding her possible relation to Satoru Gojo. Are they related? Keep reading to find out!
There are several theories suggesting that Gojo and Mei Mei could be related
Over the course of the series, the relationship between Mei Mei and Gojo has been a hot topic of debate. In that aspect, several theories about them actually being related have been put out by the fans, and one of the better-written ones is the one by Reddit user nani2222222, which states the following:
Mei Mei has been one of the most mysterious characters in Jujutsu Kaisen since the beginning, and I feel that Akutami sensei has done this for a reason.
Now, when I say that Mei Mei is a part of the Gojo Clan, that doesn’t mean she’s an active member just like how someone can say Fushiguro is a part of the Zenin clan and Toji is a part of the Zenin clan. Now here are some points I have:
- Mei Mei’s recommendation of Maki: Now, this was something people have brushed past, but why would Mei Mei go out of her way to recommend Maki when it would provide no incentive to her. She sees humans and things for their use to her so why would she recommend Maki? One, it could be because she sees potential in Maki. Or two, she sympathizes with her. Maki is a grade 4 sorcerer due to the Zenin’s family inability to accept Maki as a sorcerer and their influence on not having her promoted. This leads me to my next point.
- Mei Mei and her Relationship to her lineage: From what we know about Mei Mei is that her name is fake, she has an obsession with money, and she has a sibling. Now does this sound familiar to someone? Yes, Fushiguro, but ignore the money point we will come back to that later. Megumi Fushiguro is actually Megumi Zenin, Toji changed his last name from Zenin to Fushiguro but it doesn’t change the fact that Megumi refuses to align himself with the Zenin family. Fushiguro has a sister who he cares about a lot. Now, it’s said that in the Jujutsu World, clans pay large amounts of money to reintroduce heirs who inherit hereditary techniques. Mei Mei’s obsession with money could come from the fact that she was sold to the Gojo clan for top dollar. Remember the Gojo clan produces geniuses that can shake the Jujutsu World such as Gojo, they would have paid an ungodly amount for her and her brother under the assumption that they are gifted. However when they witnessed her lackluster skills they had her pay back the money her parents had sold her and her brother for. This could be why her brother worships her to such a degree, and why they are shown to be so close. If Fushiguro was actually sold to the Zenin family and wasn’t gifted like he was he would have ended up just like Mei Mei, obsessed with money with no morals and treated just like Maki.
- Looks: Mei Mei shares the same hair and eyebrow color as Gojo, white/blue hair isn’t very common and only 2 characters (who aren’t old or curses (fuck you mahito)) have been shown to have it (Ui Ui’s hair color hasn’t been confirmed yet :/)
- Her relationship with Gojo: Gojo and Mei Mei’s relationship is quite interesting, Gojo has called her strong in the past, a compliment Gojo does not throw out often. He also trusts her to the extent to have her investigate for a traitor.
This is just a theory so if there are any plotholes or anything you want to add on please say something!

As you can see, these are all sound arguments based on the user’s interpretation of actual facts. Now, officially, a relationship between them has not been established, but let us see what the chances of them being related actually are.
Still, the chances of them being related are quite slim
And while the above-quoted Reddit theory is sound and is based on solid arguments, we have to say that the chances that Gojo and Mei Mei are actually related are very slim. First of all, it would be too big of a reveal for Akutami to hide it for so long, especially since Mei Mei’s role in the story hasn’t really been increasing. So late in the story (Akutami has hinted at the manga ending soon, and it makes sense narratively), such a reveal wouldn’t really make sense or have the same impact. Also, in-universe, there is no way that Gojo would not mention this, so we can assume that they’re not really related.
On top of all of that, the arguments listed above, while sound, aren’t really any proof and are simply reading into the plot and nothing more. Mei Mei doesn’t seem to have a direct relation to the Gojo clan, and she doesn’t seem to belong to any of the major families in the series, and that is completely fine. Akutami might still surprise us, but the chances are quite slim.
