Jujutsu Kaisen is a series where the supporting character, Satoru Gojō, is so beloved that most people think the whole series is about him. But it is not. Namely, Jujutsu Kaisen tells the story of Yūji Itadori, the unlikely protagonist and a vessel for the extremely powerful Ryōmen Sukuna. We can attest and confirm here that Itadori is not as popular as Gojō, but he is nevertheless the protagonist of the story, and that is why we’re writing yet another article about him. Yūji Itadori is – now – one of the most famous sorcerers in the series. But how long has he been one? In this article, we are going to reveal when Yūji Itadori became a jujutsu sorcerer!

  • Article Breakdown:
  • Yūji Itadori is the protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen who, after swallowing Sukuna’s finger, became a vessel for the powerful villain and has since been fighting evil in the real world.
  • Itadori swallowed Sukuna’s finger in June 2018, which is also when he stopped attending regular school and enrolled in the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College, being a student ever since.
  • Based on the internal chronology, Itadori has been a jujutsu sorcerer for less than a year, which makes his progress even more impressive.

How did Yūji become a sorcerer?

The story of how Yūji became a sorcerer is a well-known one, but since it is directly related to the story of this article, we are going to go over that story once more. As you know, all people have the potential to become jujutsu sorcerers – it all depends on the amount of cursed energy someone has. Yūji was among those who had a high potential but was nevertheless a normal human being. Until one night in June.

What preceded that night is the following: Yūji was a member of the Occult Club in his school, a club that barely managed to exist because it had only three members (which was the minimum). Still, at one point, Yūji’s friends found a strange artifact that looked like something occult, and they unsealed it, not knowing it was one of Sukuna’s fingers. Of course, this triggered cursed spirits who wanted to go after the finger, but Megumi Fushiguro also sensed it and was interested in Yūji.

On that night in June 2018, a large group of cursed spirits attacked Yūji’s school and went after his friends. Since they had no clue what was happening and why, Megumi had to help them, but he could not do it alone. That night, when he was informed of the consequences, Yūji decided to swallow Sukuna’s finger, and that gave him such a boost that he suddenly became aware of the cursed spirits. Of course, there were risks attached to it, but Yūji was somehow able to fight off Sukuna’s desire to take over his body.

Of course, he still had no control over his newly-gained powers, but he was soon enrolled as a student of the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College, which meant that he officially became a part of the larger jujutsu community. And that brings us to our second section, in which we are going to answer the primary question of this article.

Yūji Itadori has been a sorcerer for less then a year

So, as we have explained, all the major events related to Yūji becoming a jujutsu sorcerer happened in June 2018. This was when he swallowed Sukuna’s finger, which activated his latent powers and turned him into a curse user. This is also when he was enrolled in the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College, officially becoming a student of the jujutsu arts and this is the moment he officially became a jujutsu sorcerer. Of course, his training took some time, as he needed to learn how to control and utilize his new powers, but he was able to do it relatively quickly, so we can confirm that June 2018 is the principal date we’re talking about.

Knowing the internal chronology of the series – which included a lot of events crammed in a very short period of time – we can confirm that Yūji has actually been a jujutsu sorcerer for less than a year now; to be more precise, he has been one for about half a year, since the Shinjuku Showdown started in December 2018.

This makes Yūji’s progression and evolution all the more impressive and it proves that he has one of the largest potentials in the whole series, as no one started from zero and then became so powerful that he is able to face a fully-awakened Sukuna in just six months (well, no one except the strongest ones, of course).
