Terraria’s world is packed with dangerous mobs; it seems that whenever we venture out to explore, we’re bound to run into something. Some creatures are, however, more useful than others as they provide us with rare and exceptional gear or materials that we need to progress. One of these mobs is an Ice Golem. Ice Golem provides ice feathers, frost cores, and a special type of Frost armor. Before we continue with our in-depth analysis of the Ice Golem, it’s time to cover the basics. Let’s see how to find Ice Golems in Terraria and, ultimately, defeat them.

  • Article Breakdown:
  • Ice Golem can be found in the snow biome during blizzards or rainstorms. He appears only on Hardmode and is considered to be one of the rare spawns.
  • You can defeat Ice Golem using several tactics, with most being centered around trapping him due to his poor mobility range.

Ice Golem is a hard-mode “mini-boss” and a relatively rare spawn

Ice Golem is a hard-mode “mini-boss” that can be found during blizzards and rainstorms only on Hardmode, which means that trying to spawn Ice Golem before you’ve defeated the Wall of Flesh will not be possible. Ice Golems are not able to move very fast, but their special abilities, as well as unique resistances, make them formidable enemies. The most powerful weapon in Ice Golem’s arsenal is Frost Beam, a projectile-based power that freezes you or slows you down via “Chilled” and “Frozen” debuffs.

Ice Golem is naturally immune to frost burns, “confused” effects, poisons, and frostbites. Even though they are immune to plenty of things, Ice Golems have one obvious weakness. They cannot jump very high and cannot move very fast as well. That makes defeating them somewhat easier.

When killed, Ice Golem will drop a small amount of gold, frost core, and maybe even a frost feather. Frost feather is used to craft Frozen Wings, a powerful movement item. One more reason why you should strive to defeat an ice golem is the fact that it drops so-called “Frost Armor” there’s a 33.33% drop chance that either Frost helmet, Frost breastplate, or Frost leggings will drop.

As you can see, the Ice Golem is a useful enemy to defeat. Now let’s see how to find him.

Are Ice Golems in Terarria rare?

Ice Golems are rare in Terraria. They are tied exclusively to Hardmode and will not spawn in any other mode. The spawn rate for Ice Golems is low, however, and is further complicated by the fact that several conditions have to be met in order for Ice Golem to spawn in the first place.

How to find Ice Golem in Terraria?

To find Ice Golem in Terraria, several conditions have to be met:

  • It needs to be Hardmode, Ice Golem in Terraria won’t spawn on any other mode.
  • You need to be in the snow biome. Similar to how Sand Elementals only spawn in deserts, Ice Golem will only appear in snow biomes.
  • You need to wait for a rainstorm/blizzard. While it makes no difference whether it’s day or night for Ice Golem to appear, weather conditions do play a huge role. Ice Golem can only spawn during a blizzard.

It’s important to mention that there is no limit on how many Ice Golems can spawn during a single blizzard. Depending on the duration of a blizzard, you might encounter a few Ice Golems.

How to defeat Ice Golems in Terraria?

There are several strategies on how to defeat Ice Golems in Terraria but all of them generally are oriented toward exploiting Ice Golem’s biggest weakness – their limited movement and jumping capabilities.

The following are ways in which you can defeat the Ice Golem.

1. Make a trap

You can defeat the Ice Golem by trapping him. In order to do that, follow these steps:

  • Prepare the area for golem spawn, you cannot directly affect where golem will spawn but you can help your odds by flattening the area.
  • Dig a ditch 4x blocks wide and 8x blocks high
  • to create a sort of doorway 2x blocks from the bottom. It needs to be separated from your area as well by 4x blocks.
  • In theory, Golem should spawn, walk into a ditch, and get trapped there. It should be safe enough to throw everything at him and defeat him easily without taking any damage yourself.

2. Alternative trap

Ice Golem’s poor mobility can be exploited by creating a wall-type trap as well.

  • Prepare all possible Ice Golem spawn areas. This strategy works only if you can guess where Ice Golem will spawn.
  • Place 3-4 blocks near the area where you expect an Ice Golem to spawn
  • If you manage to predict the spawn area correctly, Ice Golem should get soon trapped in your blocks, and you will be able to deal damage to him with a ranged weapon only without taking damage yourself.

3. Build a wall

Ice Golems can jump only 3 blocks in height. The last tactic exploits that weakness by utilizing a wall.

  • create a wall 5x blocks high (way out of Golem’s range)
  • Destroy the first 3 blocks
  • You should be able to hit Ice Golem with anything at this point while you are safely out of his range.

Why is the Ice Golem not spawning Terraria?

Ice Golems in Terraria will not spawn if you’re not playing Hardmode, if you’re not in the snow biome, and if you’re not currently in the blizzard. Before we start troubleshooting various bugs and glitches, make sure you have met all the following prerequisites.

If all conditions have been met and you’re still not seeing any Ice Golems around, try the following solutions:

  • make sure that your ground in the ice biome is covered in snow/ice since its the only type of terrain that Ice Golem can spawn on
  • Flatten your ground as well, the flatter the terrain the easier will the Ice Golem spawn, we’ve already mentioned this in our steps on how to defeat him.

And that’s pretty much it, the whole guide on hunting and defeating an Ice Golem. If you follow our instructions you should find him and defeat him in no time.
