James Gunn Shares Which Fandom Is the Kindest, and It’s Not DC’s
Since James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge at DC Studios, it’s been a challenging journey. They unveiled their Chapter 1: Gods & Monsters plans over a year ago, and despite progress on several key projects, Gunn continues to face daily criticism on social media.
The most intense backlash has centered on the upcoming ‘Superman’ film. Criticism has focused on casting decisions, diversity concerns, and set designs. Particularly contentious has been Superman’s suit, which some vocal fans on social media have criticized as “cheap, rubbery, and ill-fitting” for Corenswet’s portrayal of Clark Kent.
Despite this, Gunn refrains from engaging in arguments on social media, despite his active presence on Twitter and Instagram. He frequently responds to fan inquiries and dispels rumors about DC projects. Recently, when asked about the most supportive fandom in entertainment, Gunn diplomatically answered that the horror movie fandom has been the kindest in his experience.
I find that most fandoms are overall very kind – it’s just the loud voices of social media that make it seem otherwise. But, overall, I’d say horror movie fans are the kindest.

As previously mentioned, James Gunn has dealt with toxic fandoms firsthand. This isn’t new to him—before his time with DCU, he faced criticism from MCU fans. Gunn also faced consequences with Disney after old, controversial jokes surfaced, leading to his temporary dismissal. These jokes, which were criticized for targeting children, gained attention particularly because of Gunn’s outspoken views on social media regarding Donald Trump.
