Fans Criticize James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Cast For Being “Too Cheap,” “Too White” & “Not Enough Asian” ???

It seems that not a single Gunn’s announcement related to the upcoming ‘Superman’ reboot can go without controversy. A while back, when Milly Alcock was cast as Supergirl, the director was criticized for having an all-white main cast of the movie.

Now the most recent outrage is directed toward the cast being “D-List” in nature. Everything started with the announcement that Pruitt Taylor Vince will be cast as Jonathan Kent in the upcoming reboot with Neva Howell cast as Martha Kent, Superman’s adoptive human mother.

Even though both actors are established in their own right with medium-sized roles, none of them in the past has led blockbusters. Vince will star as a series regular in the upcoming Apple TV+ series ‘Lady in the Lake,’ alongside Natalie Portman, set to release this summer. His extensive television work includes appearances in popular series such as Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things,’ Marvel’s ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,’ NBC’s ‘Heroes Reborn, while Neva Howell has a career spanning over 30 years, portraying various characters such as Miss Roberts in ‘Ghosts of the Ozarks’ to the salt-of-the-earth Alma in ‘Mercy Street.”‘She has also appeared in various television series and films, including ‘The Resident,’ ‘Run the Race,’ and ‘Novitiate.’

Fans went as far as to describe the casting of the upcoming ‘Superman’ as “discount casting.”

And, of course, the race arguments:

As far as the cast goes, 90 % of names have already been revealed. So far, the main cast consists of David Corenswet, who will portray Clark Kent/Superman with Michael Holt as Lex Luthor on the opposite side. Rachel Brosnahan takes on the role of Lois Lane, while Isabela Merced is set to play Hawkgirl. Edi Gathegi will depict Mister Terrific, and Nathan Fillion will bring to life Guy Gardner/Green Lantern. Anthony Carrigan is cast as Rex Mason/Metamorpho, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica/Engineer. Sara Sampaio is set to portray Eve Teschmacher, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen and Sean Gunn will appear as Maxwell Lord, recently, Wendell Pierce has been cast as editor-in-chief of The Daily Planet – Perry White.

As you can see, the cast is plenty diverse with an equal mix of POC and established actors, so can we just stop with the racial arguments? What happened to the good ol’ times when roles were given based on merit and did not check all the possible boxes?

The arguments that Gunn’s upcoming movie has a “CW Cast” are even more ridiculous as it makes no sense to include stars in roles that most likely won’t be relevant for a large part of the movie. Such castings only serve to bloat the already inflated movie budgets, which in turn equals bigger chances that the movie will be a commercial failure since it won’t be able to meet ridiculous box-office expectations to turn profitable or even break even.

What do you think? Should Gunn cast more POC or a more expensive cast? Let us know in the comments below!
