Kevin Feige Confirms ‘Blade’ Will Be Rated R Despite Production Challenges
One highly anticipated Marvel Studios project that faced issues long before the strikes began is ‘Blade.’ This MCU-based movie follows Eric Brooks, the renowned vampire hunter from the comics, and serves as a reboot of the popular ‘Blade’ trilogy, which helped pave the way for the MCU we know today.
Summarizing all the problems ‘Blade’ has encountered would be challenging. The film’s star, Mahershala Ali, pitched the project to the studio long ago and was officially announced as Blade in 2018. Since then, the movie has experienced a constant cycle of script issues and has gone through several writers and directors during its development.
Last year, the film’s former director, Yann Demange, asserted that the movie would be rated R. He emphasized that achieving this rating was crucial for him, as it was the only way to do the character justice.
They gave me the R, which is so important.
In a recent podcast interview with BlackTree TV, Feige seemingly confirmed the movie’s rating, emphasizing that this type of rating is essential for the character.
I think that’s right. “I mean, for the last two years as we’ve been trying to crack that movie, the most important thing for us is not rushing it and making sure we are making the right Blade movie. […] Because there were some great Blade movies years ago — they were all rated-R. So I think that’s, like Deadpool, inherent with the character of Blade.
Marvel Studios has been gradually exploring R-rated content, allowing for darker and more mature stories. We’ve already seen one Disney+ TV-MA show with ‘Echo,’ and we’re eagerly anticipating the first R-rated animated project, ‘Marvel Zombies.’ This week marks the release of the MCU’s first R-rated movie, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ which will hopefully pave the way for more mature-rated content within the franchise.
