Released two weeks ago, Deadpool & Wolverine is currently shattering box office records and delighting millions of fans worldwide. A significant part of the film’s success can be credited to the appearance of numerous legacy characters.

Before the movie’s release, there were rumors that over 20 characters would make a return, including legacy figures from the Fox X-Men franchise and characters from other Marvel properties.

Certain characters were confirmed to appear ahead of the movie’s release, including Garner’s Elektra, Keen’s X-23, and Patrick Stewart’s Professor X.

A week or so before the film’s debut, news of Stewart’s return circulated widely online. While it’s tricky to pinpoint the exact source of the rumor, it was credible enough for most major outlets to cover it.

In January, Stewart had hinted at a possible appearance in the movie. When asked if fans could expect him in Deadpool & Wolverine, the actor responded:

“It has come up, there’s been a process. But the last two to three years have been so difficult with the labor problems and the health problems. COVID, you know…”

However, it turns out there were no discussions about it at all, according to the film’s director, Shawn Levy. In an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Levy revealed that Professor X was never part of the plan.

Never even discussed. [He was] studied. Studied by Emma Corrin big time because the Cassandra sibling-hood to Professor X is really interesting to us. But no, never discussed. Never, never considered.

Professor X had a significant role in relation to Cassandra Nova, but beyond that storyline, it’s hard to envision what the character’s role would have been after Nova was dealt with, so Levy’s comments make sense.

Levy also recently remarked on how the online rumors and speculation worked in the movie’s favor, as the internet’s mix of rumors, half-truths, and wild guesses helped keep the film’s secrets under wraps.

That was one of the loudest rumors that came out of nowhere. It was never true. Thank you, internet, for building such a smokescreen of rumors and half-truths so that no one ever knew what was going to happen.
