On Disney+ Day 2021, it was announced that an animated ‘Marvel Zombies’ TV series was in development for Disney+, with Zeb Wells as the writer and executive producer. The series will expand on the universe introduced in the ‘What If…?’ episode titled ‘What If… Zombies!?’

While the series has been in development for some time, there have been occasional updates, particularly as Marvel Studios increasingly focuses on animation.

At this year’s Marvel Animation D23 panel, footage of the ‘Marvel Zombies’ show was unveiled, offering some intriguing glimpses. Showrunners Andrews and Winderbaum presented a scene where the last survivors in San Francisco, including Shang-Chi and Katy, are rescued by Ten Rings agents. Wenwu steps in, but when Shang-Chi is bitten by zombies, Wenwu sacrifices himself to stop the infection from spreading.

Five years later, Shang-Chi leads a desert caravan reminiscent of “The Road Warrior,” but their journey is disrupted by Skrulls attempting to steal their cattle. Shang-Chi and his team, potentially including Jimmy Woo, are ready for combat.

This footage confirms that Shang-Chi will be a key character alongside the previously mentioned Kamala Khan. Although no release date has been set, it has been reiterated that the series will be rated TV-MA, making ‘Marvel Zombies’ the first Marvel animated series aimed at adults. The show will consist of four episodes and is described as an “event” rather than a mini-series.
