Another PS5 exclusive game has been quietly delayed, and this time it’s a project that many PlayStation fans have been really excited about. The new God of War game rumored to be set in ancient Greece is now expected to arrive in 2026, according to insider Jeff Grubb from Giant Bomb.

Grubb shared this rumor during a recent episode of the podcast Last of the Nintendogs, where he said, “I have Marathon and the unannounced new God of War Greek project, which I heard was pushed into 2026, as well.” This is a bit of a disappointment for fans who were hoping to see this game much sooner.

Rumors about this Greek God of War game have been around for a while. Earlier this year, some fans thought the next God of War would be set in Egypt. But well-known insider Tom Henderson claimed the game would take place in Greece, and Grubb’s latest comments support that idea.

This new title is said to be a spin-off rather than a mainline game. The rumor says it will be a 2.5D Metroidvania style game and will follow Kratos before he became a god. It’s also expected that Deimos, Kratos’s brother, will return.

Of course, this is all still unofficial. Sony hasn’t announced anything about this game yet, and delays like this happen a lot in the gaming industry. The plans could change again anytime.

For players wanting a God of War experience while they wait, God of War 3 Remastered is still available on the PlayStation Store. Plus, if you have a PS Plus Premium subscription, you can play it without extra cost.

The God of War series has been a big part of PlayStation’s success in recent years. The 2018 reboot was praised for its deep story about Kratos and his son, moving away from the older style of just action and revenge.

It won many awards and sold extremely well. Then, in 2022, God of War Ragnarok continued that story and also did very well with fans and critics. However, Ragnarok wrapped up the story that started in 2018, and it wasn’t clear where the series would go next.

Rumors have suggested that before a new main story with Kratos, there will be a spin-off game, and that’s probably this Greek project. Some thought it might have been revealed during the recent PlayStation State of Play event, but it didn’t show up. This has left many wondering if it’s real at all.

Jeff Grubb’s latest news suggests the game won’t come out until 2026. While there’s no exact date, it might be in the early part of the year. If it was meant to come out in late 2025, this delay means it’s been pushed back quite a bit. Still, these things can change quickly in game development.

There are rumors about a big PlayStation Showcase coming this fall, where this game could finally be announced. It might also appear at The Game Awards, which is where God of War Ragnarok’s DLC was revealed last time. This delay news also comes after Sony cancelled a live-service God of War game earlier this year, though not much is known about that cancelled project.

So, for now, it looks like fans will have to wait a bit longer to explore Greece with Kratos in a new way. But the good news is that the project hasn’t been dropped, just delayed.
