Marvel has reserved July 23, 2027, on its release calendar for a movie that hasn’t been named yet. Sources tell Variety, though, that this won’t be an X-Men film. Marvel didn’t comment on the story.

One strong guess is that this untitled movie could be “Shang-Chi 2.” Back in December 2021, Marvel announced a sequel to “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” with Destin Daniel Cretton set to return as writer and director. Simu Liu is expected to come back as Shang-Chi too.

Filming was supposed to start in March 2025, but since then, there have been very few updates about the movie. Recently, Liu shared a workout video, which got fans excited and speculating that he might be preparing to return to his MCU role.

This sequel fits well into the schedule because it’s set to come out between “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars.” Plus, the Ten Rings are rumored to be very important in the Multiversal Saga, kind of like how the Infinity Stones were in earlier stories.

Another possible movie for this date is “Doctor Strange 3.” In the last few months, rumors about this third film have been growing. Benedict Cumberbatch is expected to return, along with Charlize Theron’s character Clea, who might have a bigger role this time. The movie is said to focus on a group called the Black Priests and will feature Dormammu as Doctor Strange tries to fix “incursions” he has caused.

There were also reports that Denzel Washington might play Dormammu, but Washington later revealed that Ryan Coogler is writing a role for him in the upcoming “Black Panther 3.” Given Doctor Strange’s key part in the Multiverse Saga, many believe “Doctor Strange 3” is the most likely choice for this release date.

The third strong contender is “Black Panther 3.” Marvel Studios is taking this project seriously. By November 2022, Ryan Coogler and Kevin Feige had already talked about making a third Black Panther movie.

Two years later, Coogler was in talks with Denzel Washington about casting him for the film. Nate Moore, who left Marvel Studios in March 2025, is set to come back as a producer. In February 2025, Moore confirmed Coogler would direct the film, and active work would start once Coogler finished his movie “Sinners” later that year. Coogler confirmed Washington’s casting in June 2025.

The July 2027 release slot is still open, but these three films, “Shang-Chi 2,” “Doctor Strange 3,” and “Black Panther 3” seem like the strongest possibilities to fill it. Fans will have to wait to see which one Marvel picks.
