Everything We Know So Far About ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters on December 18, 2026. That’s the official release date set by Marvel. Filming started earlier, in April 2025, at Pinewood Studios in England. This place is famous for big movie productions.

Anthony and Joe Russo, are directing Avengers: Doomsday. They’ve made other popular MCU films: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The script comes from Stephen McFeely. He’s worked with the Russos before and knows the MCU well. Three companies are behind the movie: Marvel Studios, AGBO, and The Walt Disney Company.

The movie has a huge lineup of actors playing famous characters. Here’s who’s confirmed so far:

• Robert Downey Jr. plays Victor von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom. He used to play Iron Man, but now he’s the bad guy.
• Pedro Pascal is Reed Richards, or Mister Fantastic, from the Fantastic Four.
• Vanessa Kirby plays Sue Storm, the Invisible Woman, also from the Fantastic Four.
• Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor, the hammer-wielding Avenger.
• Anthony Mackie is Sam Wilson, the new Captain America.
• Sebastian Stan plays Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier, who leads the New Avengers.
• Paul Rudd is back as Scott Lang, known as Ant-Man.
• Florence Pugh plays Yelena Belova, a skilled fighter from Black Widow.
• Letitia Wright is Shuri, the new Black Panther from Wakanda.
• Tom Hiddleston returns as Loki, the tricky God of Mischief.
• Patrick Stewart plays Charles Xavier, or Professor X, leader of the X-Men.
• Ian McKellen is Erik Lehnsherr, also called Magneto, a powerful mutant.
• Alan Cumming plays Kurt Wagner, known as Nightcrawler, who can teleport.
• Rebecca Romijn is Raven Darkhölme, or Mystique, a shape-shifter.
• Kelsey Grammer plays Dr. Hank McCoy, called Beast, a smart mutant.
• Channing Tatum joins as Gambit, a mutant who throws explosive cards.

This cast mixes Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and more. It’s a big team-up.

The plot isn’t fully clear yet. Marvel is keeping it secret. But we know the movie will show lots of heroes fighting Doctor Doom. The Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, New Avengers, and X-Men will all join (?) forces. Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., is the main villain. The story might involve different universes crashing together, a theme from the MCU’s Multiverse Saga. This film is part of Phase Six, so it’s a key piece of the bigger story.

Originally, the villain was supposed to be Kang the Conqueror. But Marvel changed plans after the actor playing Kang, Jonathan Majors, had legal trouble and left the project. Now, Doctor Doom takes center stage.

Filming kicked off in April 2025. The crew is working at Pinewood Studios in England. They’re using big indoor sets to keep things hidden. The Russo brothers want to avoid leaks, so they’re being extra careful about where and how they shoot.

This movie is huge for a few reasons. Robert Downey Jr. coming back as Doctor Doom is a shock to fans. He’s a “familiar” face in a new role. Plus, the film brings in the X-Men and Fantastic Four, teams that weren’t always part of the MCU. Marvel got control of them after buying parts of 21st Century Fox. Now, they’re mixing everyone together for the first time on this scale.

The Russo brothers and Stephen McFeely have a strong history with Marvel. Their past films were megahits, so expectations are high. Avengers: Doomsday (and Secret Wars) will wrap up the Multiverse Saga, setting up what’s next for the MCU.
