Did You Know Josh Radnor Pursues a Music Career After ‘How I Met Your Mother’?
For nine seasons, actor Josh Radnor was the face of Ted Mosby, the hopeful romantic at the center of the popular sitcom “How I Met Your Mother.” When the show ended its long run in 2014, fans were curious about what would come next for the man who played the iconic character. In the years since, Radnor has deliberately carved out a diverse career path, venturing into television, film, theater, and music, proving his creative talents extend far beyond a single role.
One of Radnor’s first moves after the sitcom concluded was a return to his theatrical roots. In 2014, he took to the Broadway stage in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Disgraced.” This wasn’t a new world for him; he had previously appeared in stage productions like “The Graduate” and “The Paris Letter.”
His commitment to theater continued with a role in “The Babylon Line” at Lincoln Center Theater and, in early 2024, he starred in the world premiere of “The Ally” at The Public Theater in New York City.
In the world of television, Radnor has made a point to select roles that stand in stark contrast to the lighthearted nature of Ted Mosby. He portrayed a morphine-addicted surgeon during the Civil War in the PBS drama “Mercy Street,” which aired for two seasons.
Following that, he played an inspiring high school English teacher in the NBC musical drama “Rise” in 2018. More recently, he joined the cast of the Amazon Prime series “Hunters,” a story about a crew of Nazi hunters in the 1970s. He also appeared in a recurring role in the critically acclaimed FX on Hulu series “Fleishman Is in Trouble.”
Even while filming “How I Met Your Mother,” Radnor was developing his skills behind the camera. He wrote and directed two independent films, “Happythankyoumoreplease” (2010) and “Liberal Arts” (2012), both of which he also starred in.
“Happythankyoumoreplease” was well-received at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the prestigious Audience Award. He has also indicated plans to direct a science-fiction thriller titled “The Leaves.”
Perhaps the most unexpected direction Radnor’s career has taken is his serious pursuit of music. He formed an indie-folk duo, Radnor and Lee, with Australian musician Ben Lee. The two met when Lee made a guest appearance on “How I Met Your Mother,” and they bonded over shared interests in spirituality and music.
They released their first album, “Radnor & Lee,” in 2017, and followed it up with “Golden State” in 2020. Their music found an audience, and they toured in the U.S., South America, and Australia.
Building on that experience, Radnor launched a solo music career. He released his debut solo EP, “One More Then I’ll Let You Go,” in 2021. This was a precursor to a larger project: a solo double album. The first installment, “Eulogy: Volume I,” was released in late 2023, followed by “Eulogy: Volume II” in 2024.
Radnor has said that learning to play guitar and write songs felt like discovering a “new superpower” and has helped him feel younger by embracing a new skill. His songwriting often explores personal themes of love, loss, and growth.
In early 2025, it was announced that Radnor would be revisiting his most famous role, but in a new way. He is set to co-host a rewatch podcast with “How I Met Your Mother” co-creator Craig Thomas called “How We Made Your Mother,” giving fans a new perspective on the beloved show.
Through his varied work in theater, television, film, and music, Josh Radnor has successfully navigated the post-sitcom chapter of his career. While the character of Ted Mosby remains a significant part of his story, Radnor has demonstrated a clear and determined effort to explore a wide range of artistic expressions, establishing a multifaceted identity as a creator.
