Everything You Need To Know Before ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2
The wait is almost over for the second season of the hit show “Peacemaker.” The series will bring back the titular character for more action and dark comedy. This new season is set to deepen the story of Christopher Smith, also known as Peacemaker, and expand its connections within the larger DC Universe.
The upcoming season of “Peacemaker” marks a significant step in the new DC Universe (DCU) shaped by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The show will now be more tightly woven into the overarching narrative of the DCU. Events from the new “Superman” movie, which was released last month, will have a direct impact on the series. In fact, Season 2 is set to take place just one month after the events of the “Superman” film.
This integration means that while the first season stood somewhat on its own, the new episodes will be firmly part of the new canon. James Gunn has explained that events from the first season will be acknowledged through a “previously seen” montage, making certain key moments officially part of the new timeline.
This “soft reboot” approach allows the show to carry forward its established characters and their histories while aligning with the new direction of the DCU.
John Cena is returning to his role as the complex anti-hero Peacemaker. He is joined by the core cast from the first season. Danielle Brooks will be back as Leota Adebayo, and Freddie Stroma will reprise his role as the fan-favorite Vigilante. Jennifer Holland returns as Emilia Harcourt, and Steve Agee is back as John Economos.
The new season will also introduce several new characters. Frank Grillo is a major new addition, playing Rick Flag Sr. This character is the father of Rick Flag Jr., who was killed by Peacemaker in “The Suicide Squad.”
This sets up a significant conflict for the new season. Grillo will also voice the character in the animated series “Creature Commandos,” highlighting the interconnectedness of the new DCU.
Other new cast members include Sol RodrÃguez as Sasha Bordeaux, Tim Meadows as Langston Fleury, and David Denman in a yet-to-be-disclosed role. Viewers can also expect appearances from characters featured in the “Superman” movie, such as Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord.
Michael Rooker, a frequent collaborator with James Gunn, will also appear as a new character named Red St. Wild. Robert Patrick is also slated to return as Peacemaker’s deceased father, Auggie Smith, likely in flashbacks or hallucinations that continue to haunt his son.
The central plot of Season 2 will explore Peacemaker’s personal journey and his struggle for redemption. He will be dealing with the emotional fallout from the first season, including the death of his father at his own hands. The world is not ready to accept him as a hero, and he is grappling with his own identity.
A key storyline will revolve around the introduction of a parallel dimension. Peacemaker will discover an alternate reality where his life is seemingly perfect. This discovery will force him to confront his past traumas and make crucial decisions about his future.
This multiversal element also provides a narrative tool to bridge the gap between the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU) and the new DCU. The Quantum Unfolding Chamber (QUC), the dimensional storage space introduced in the first season, will play a pivotal role in this storyline.
The main antagonist for the season is set to be Rick Flag Sr., who is seeking revenge for his son’s death. This creates a direct and personal conflict for Peacemaker, forcing him to confront the consequences of his past actions. The season will also continue to explore the dynamics within Peacemaker’s team, as they face new threats and challenges together.
Filming for the second season began in the spring of 2024 at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, and concluded in November of the same year. The production ran concurrently with the filming of the “Superman” movie, allowing for a seamless integration of cast and storylines.
James Gunn, the creative force behind the first season, has written all eight episodes of the new season. While he was not able to direct every episode due to his commitments with “Superman” and his role as co-CEO of DC Studios, he did direct three of the episodes. Other directors for the season include Greg Mottola, Peter Sollett, and Alethea Jones.
The second season of “Peacemaker” is scheduled to be released on HBO Max on August 21, 2025. This positions it as the next major project in the DCU following the “Superman” film.
The new season of “Peacemaker” promises to deliver the same blend of action, humor, and character-driven storytelling that made the first season a success, while also playing a crucial role in building the new, interconnected DC Universe.
