This November, Marvel is taking fans on a time-travel adventure back to 1776 with a new five-issue limited series called 1776. The story brings together some of Marvel’s biggest heroes, like Captain America and Spider-Man, as they travel to the heart of the American Revolution. The series is written by the well-known J. Michael Straczynski and illustrated by artists Ron Lim and Sean Damien Hill.

Marvel revealed this exciting project at last month’s San Diego Comic-Con, sharing that the story will mix superhero action with real history. The heroes join famous figures such as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams to stop someone from changing the course of history. The series highlights how important it is to protect the founding moments of the United States, not only to preserve history but also to save the future of these heroes themselves.

Trouble begins when a mysterious force tries to mess with history. Captain America and his team jump into action to defend the birth of America. The stakes are high, and the heroes must carefully navigate the past to keep the future safe and unbroken.

Straczynski shared why he was excited to write this story: “One of the (many) things that I like about the Marvel Universe is that it takes place in the real world, our world. It’s New York, or Chicago, not some imaginary location. This also applies to our history, and the opportunity to view the events of 1776 through the lens of our characters, and to better understand the meaning of those events, and the sacrifices involved, was way too good to pass up. At a time when so much of American discourse has become factionalized, it is a good time to look back and see where this began, and what it still means today.”

The main covers for the series are done by Pete Woods, with variant covers for the first issue by several top artists like Joe Quesada, Paulo Siqueira, and Steve Rude. There’s also a special tribute by Phil Jimenez to one of the most popular Spider-Man comics from the early 2000s.

In all, 1776 is shaping up to be a thrilling mix of history and heroism. It’s a fresh way to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary and a reminder of the bravery that shaped the country, all with a Marvel twist.
