The first photos from the set of Clayface have started showing up on social media, and they’ve already cleared up one of the biggest rumors around the DCU.

The pictures show Gotham City police cars and news vans. What caught the most attention is the Gotham City Police Department logo. Fans noticed it looks nothing like the one used in Matt Reeves’ Batman projects.

Some people online argued that logos can change, but that doesn’t really make sense here. Reeves’ Batman movies were never supposed to be part of the DCU, and a brand-new Batman is going to make his debut in The Brave and the Bold.

So, these photos confirm that we’re looking at a completely different version of Gotham City, made for the DCU. And with that, the long-running theory that Reeves’ Gotham could cross into the DCU is finally done. Fans are now wondering if this movie might even give us the first live-action Batman cameo in the new universe.

The story of Clayface itself is shaping up to be something very different from most DC movies. It’s about an actor whose face is ruined by a gangster. Out of desperation, he turns to a scientist who changes his body into clay.

Back in 2023, filmmaker Mike Flanagan met with James Gunn and Peter Safran about the project. Flanagan’s idea was to show Clayface in a new light, not just as a typical villain.

DC Studios officially gave the film the green light in December 2024 with a script written by Flanagan. At that time, Peter Safran even said the movie’s tone reminded him of the 1986 film The Fly. Matt Reeves is producing the film with Lynn Harris through 6th & Idaho Productions. Flanagan couldn’t direct because of his work on The Exorcist and a Carrie miniseries, so James Watkins stepped in to direct while Hossein Amini worked on a new script draft.

In June of this year, actor Tom Rhys Harries was cast as Clayface. Filming kicked off in a few days ago at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in England, with a release date set for September 11, 2026.

With the first set photos out, it’s clear the movie is carving out its own space in the DCU. And now fans are just waiting to see if Batman himself will show up alongside Clayface.
