Live-Action ‘Street Fighter’ Movie Officially Enters Production
Legendary Entertainment’s live-action Street Fighter movie is officially moving forward. The studio acquired the rights to the franchise in April 2023, and after some changes behind the camera, the project now has a confirmed director and a growing cast.
Originally, Danny and Michael Philippou were in talks to direct the film, but they stepped away in June 2024 to focus on another project, Bring Her Back. Later that year, Kitao Sakurai entered discussions to take over, and in February 2025, he was officially confirmed as director.
Filming is set to begin in Sydney, Australia, in fall 2025.
The movie was initially scheduled to be released on March 20, 2026, by Sony Pictures Releasing. However, that release date was removed from the schedule less than a year before it was set to premiere, leaving the film without a confirmed release date for now.
Casting news has steadily emerged in recent months. Nexus Point News reported in April 2025 that Andrew Koji and Noah Centineo were being considered for the lead roles of Ryu and Ken, with Dalan Musson writing the latest draft of the script.
By May, Koji and Centineo, along with Jason Momoa and Roman Reigns, were in talks to join the project. Momoa is expected to play Blanka, while Reigns is in discussions for Akuma.
Additional casting rumors have included Walton Goggins, Orville Peck, and Eric André as M. Bison, Vega, and the Windbag announcer, respectively. Other names reported by Deadline and Nexus Point News include Callina Liang, Andrew Schulz, David Dastmalchian, Vidyut Jammwal, 50 Cent, Cody Rhodes, and Hirooki Goto in roles such as Chun-Li, Dan Hibiki, Dhalsim, Balrog, Guile, and E. Honda.
The official Street Fighter X account confirmed production has begun, posting, “The strongest fighters have gathered! The Street Fighter movie is now officially in production with @Legendary. Make sure to follow @Street_Fighter for updates.” The tweet was shared by Takayuki Nakayama.

Fans are eagerly anticipating how the iconic video game characters will be portrayed in live-action. With a director in place, filming about to start, and a star-studded cast, the movie is shaping up to be a major event for both gamers and action movie audiences.
My take: The Street Fighter franchise has a long history, and fans have high expectations for a live-action adaptation. The mix of big-name actors and a confirmed director is promising, but translating a beloved game to film is always challenging. It will be exciting to see if this adaptation can capture the energy and spirit of the games. What do you think about the cast and production updates? Share your thoughts in the comments.
