‘The Batman 2’: Matt Reeves Teases the Villain Fans Might See Next
The Batman: Part II is set to premiere on October 1, 2027, with Matt Reeves returning as director and co-writer alongside Mattson Tomlin.
Robert Pattinson will reprise his role as Batman, with Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell returning as the Penguin. The sequel will follow Batman as he investigates a new case while uncovering more corruption and division in Gotham City after the events of the first film and The Penguin.
The sequel was announced in April 2022, but production faced several delays due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes and Reeves’s focus on refining the script. The screenplay was completed in June, and filming is expected to start around late April or early May 2026 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in England.
Matt Reeves recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and shared some details about the movie, especially regarding the villain. He said the villain has “never really been done in a movie before.”
He also hinted that the film will focus more on Bruce Wayne’s personal life than on Batman’s crime-fighting activities.
One likely villain is Tommy Elliot, who becomes Hush. Elliot was a childhood friend of Bruce Wayne who grew up hating the Waynes after they stopped him from killing his father. Hush eventually learns
Batman’s secret identity and seeks to destroy both Bruce Wayne and Batman. He even undergoes plastic surgery to resemble Bruce.
Another possibility is the Court of Owls, a secret organization of Gotham’s wealthiest citizens. They operate behind the scenes and control the city with an army of operatives called Talons. Introducing them would allow the story to focus on Gotham’s corruption while keeping a grounded, crime-drama feel, which matches Reeves’s vision for the sequel.
Reeves also confirmed that one character will not return. Cristin Milioti’s Sofia Falcone, who won an Emmy for her role in The Penguin, will not appear in The Batman 2. Reeves explained that the story had already moved past her character by the time the series aired.
When asked about a potential third Batman film, Reeves said he doesn’t know if it will happen. However, he expressed interest in joining the larger DC Universe after completing the Batman series.
