Showtime’s Hit Series to End After Eight Seasons

Showtime’s popular drama series The Chi is set to end after its upcoming eighth season. The show, created and produced by Lena Waithe, has been a staple of the network, and the decision to conclude it comes before production on Season 8 begins, allowing the writers to plan a proper ending for the story.

Speaking to Deadline, Waithe reflected on the series and its impact. “When I created The Chi, it wasn’t just about making a TV show — it was about owning our narratives and telling our stories with truth, care, nuance and complexity. It was about showing the soul of the South Side — the beauty, the pain, the grit, and the magic that lives in every block, and in every family,” she said.

“After much reflection, we have made the decision to end The Chi with season 8. I know, for the sake of our story and our characters, it’s the right thing.”

Waithe also emphasized her commitment to delivering a satisfying conclusion for the cast, crew, and fans.

“I am committed to delivering a final season that our Chi Family deserves. It’s been the honor of my life to build a platform for artists to shine — not just in front of the camera, but behind the scenes as well. To helm the longest-running Black drama on television is a huge honor and it’s something I don’t take lightly.”

The Chi, which focuses on life in a South Side Chicago neighborhood, explores the interconnected lives of characters like Emmett, Brandon, Ronnie, and Kevin as events unfold in their community. The show has been praised for its honest and heartfelt portrayal of the challenges and triumphs in the area it represents.

The series has been a critical success. On Rotten Tomatoes, the first season holds an 87% approval rating, with the consensus stating, “Like an optimistic companion to The Wire, The Chi explores the complexities of life in the South Side of Chicago, with a tender touch and a clear affection for its captivating characters.”

Metacritic gives the season a score of 73 out of 100, indicating generally favorable reviews.

The Chi was renewed for its seventh season in May 2024, which premiered in May 2025, and shortly afterward, it was renewed for an eighth season. It was later confirmed that this upcoming season would mark the show’s conclusion.
