Elizabeth Olsen Open to Returning as Scarlet Witch Even as Superhero Fatigue Grows
Elizabeth Olsen has once again shared her love for playing Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch, and said she would be happy to return to the role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
During a talk at the 2025 Hamptons International Film Festival, held at Sag Harbor Cinema, the 36-year-old actress spoke about her time as the beloved superhero and reflected on what the character has meant to her.
Olsen said she’s still open to returning to the MCU and feels there’s more to explore with Wanda. “It is something that I love, and it’s something I always want to return to,” she said.
“I think the thing that’s been so special about the last five years is I’ve gotten to do so much with the character that I never thought I would. There are still character through lines that have happened in the comics that I’d love to do that I think fans also want to.”
Olsen first appeared in the MCU over ten years ago and quickly became one of its most powerful and emotional characters.
Her breakout performance came in WandaVision, where she earned an Emmy nomination for bringing depth and heartbreak to the story of a grieving hero. The show explored Wanda’s pain after losing Vision and gave fans a new understanding of her powers and emotions.
Wanda’s story took a darker turn in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where she became the film’s main villain.
Consumed by grief and the influence of the Darkhold, she fought desperately to reunite with her sons from another reality. The movie ended with Wanda sacrificing herself and destroying the Darkhold, but since her body was never shown, many fans believe her story isn’t over.
Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, has also hinted that Scarlet Witch could return in future MCU projects. Olsen’s recent comments seem to support that idea, showing she’s ready to step back into the role if given the chance.
The actress also talked about the ongoing debate around superhero fatigue and said she understands why some people feel tired of the genre.
Still, she believes the experience of being part of a long-running franchise is unique. “Some people have ongoing television series that they get to return to. Very few, I feel like, get to be a part of franchises that, I know we might culturally get a little bit exhausted by, but there is something about them that becomes very familial,” she explained.
She went on to say that being part of the MCU has been a rewarding experience both personally and professionally. “There’s nothing else really like it, and I don’t know that I’ll have [that] again unless it’s for an ongoing show,” Olsen said. “I do like that kind of consistency. It feels good. I mean, job security feels nice — I think we can all agree on that.”
Olsen also reflected on her early days in Marvel, saying she felt “very lucky and very scared” when she first joined the franchise. Over time, the character became one of her favorites to play. “It’s really fruitful, and the stories have only gotten better for me, my character. I really enjoyed it,” she said.
Fans have been hoping for Wanda’s return ever since Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and with Olsen’s enthusiasm to come back, it feels more possible than ever. Whether it’s in a future movie or Disney+ series, Scarlet Witch might still have more magic left to show.
