Idris Elba is returning to Netflix for a new Luther movie, continuing the story of the tough detective fans have followed for years. The new film will bring back some familiar faces and a dark, thrilling story set in London.

Ruth Wilson, who played the clever and dangerous Alice Morgan in the series, is also coming back. She didn’t appear in last year’s movie, Luther: The Fallen Sun, so this will be her first time returning to the big screen version of the story. Dermot Crowley, who plays police superintendent Schenk, is also back, adding another familiar presence from the original series.

The film is being directed by Jamie Payne, who has directed episodes of the show as well as the previous movie. Neil Cross, the creator of Luther, wrote the story. It focuses on a series of violent, seemingly random murders in London, and Luther is quietly brought back to help. The central tension is whether he can stop the chaos when it feels like everyone is against him.

Payne shared his excitement about the project, saying, “Neil has yet again, created a wonderfully dark tale to bring us all back together. It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talents that are Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley. I am also thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson.”

Neil Cross also spoke about the characters, saying, “Luther, Alice and Schenk are more than characters to me, they’re family. I never stop wondering where they are, what’s become of them … and what horrors might be stirring in the shadows of London while Luther’s not around. So we decided to get together and find out what happens next.”

The film is being produced by Chernin Entertainment, Neil Cross, Idris Elba, Gina Carter through their 22Summers company, and Tim Lewis. Filming is set to start in February.

Fans of Luther can expect a new story that brings back the gritty, intense world of the detective, with familiar characters and fresh threats in London.
