Apple TV Reportedly Developing Cold War-Era Prequel to ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’
Apple TV is reportedly moving forward with a prequel to the popular monster series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, according to sources speaking to Nexus Point News. The upcoming series will follow a younger version of Lee Shaw, played by Wyatt Russell, and take place during the Cold War, exploring tensions between the United States and Russia in a world filled with giant monsters.
Joby Harold, known for his work on Obi-Wan Kenobi and Army of the Dead, will serve as showrunner, according to NPN. He will also executive produce alongside his wife and producing partner Tory Tunnell through their company, Safehouse Pictures.
Wyatt Russell, who stars as the young Lee Shaw, will also take on an executive producer role. Both Harold and Tunnell were executive producers on the original Monarch series, which was created by Chris Black and Matt Fraction.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, produced by Legendary Television, is part of the Monsterverse franchise and draws from Godzilla by Toho Co., Ltd.
The original series follows the members of the Monarch organization as they encounter Godzilla and other Titans over several decades. Its cast includes Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett, Elisa Lasowski, Wyatt Russell, and Kurt Russell. The series premiered on Apple TV+ on November 17, 2023, and was renewed for a second season, scheduled to debut on February 27, 2026.
The prequel aims to expand the story of Monarch by showing how Lee Shaw navigated the political tensions of the Cold War while facing monstrous threats. With Wyatt Russell in the lead and experienced producers behind the scenes, fans can likely expect the same mix of thrilling action and rich storytelling that made the original series a hit.
