Another Shooter Game Heads to Live Action at Sony with Justin Lin at the Helm
Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are moving ahead with a live-action Helldivers movie, and the project now has a major name attached. Justin Lin, known for directing several Fast and Furious films, will lead the adaptation.
Lin is also producing the movie through his company, Perfect Storm Entertainment. Hutch Parker will produce as well, along with PlayStation Productions heads Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan. The script is written by Gary Dauberman, who worked on the It and Annabelle films.
The information comes from details shared by Sony and PlayStation Productions shared by THR.
Helldivers is based on Arrowhead Game Studios’ popular top-down shooter released in 2015. Sony Computer Entertainment first published the game on PlayStation platforms before later bringing it to PC. The story follows a military group called the Helldivers, a team sent across the galaxy to defend Super Earth and protect what they call managed democracy.
The game was well received, earned strong reviews and sold millions of copies. A sequel arrived in early 2024, bringing the series back into the spotlight. The gameplay is known for chaotic missions, random map layouts and the risk of friendly fire, which forces players to work together carefully. Players choose their gear, pick where to land and use different tools called stratagems to support their tactics in battle.
Sony and PlayStation have been investing heavily in adapting their games. They previously teamed up for Uncharted, which made over $400 million worldwide. PlayStation Productions is also behind shows like Twisted Metal on Peacock and The Last of Us on HBO.
