Molly McNearney, the wife of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, has opened up about losing touch with some family members over their support for Donald Trump. Speaking on the We Can Do Hard Things podcast, McNearney said she tried to convince conservative relatives not to vote for Trump ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

McNearney explained that she grew up in a Republican household and initially understood why some family members supported Trump. However, after leaving home and meeting people with different perspectives, her feelings changed. She said she had some sympathy for relatives who were “deliberately misinformed” but still struggled with their choices.

“It hurts me so much because of the personal relationship I now have, where my husband is out there fighting this man, and to me, them voting for Trump is them not voting for my husband and me and our family. And I unfortunately have kind of lost relationships with people in my family because of it,” McNearney said.

She emphasized that her disagreements were not about politics in a general sense, but about “family values.” McNearney recalled sending emails to relatives listing reasons not to vote for Trump, but most ignored her and some responded with what she called “truly insane responses,” which strained their relationships further.

While she has lost contact with some conservative relatives, McNearney said she has grown closer to family members who share her views. “And I hate that this has happened. … It feels silly,” she added. “You know, part of me goes, ‘Don’t let politics get in the way,’ but to me, this isn’t politics. It’s truly values. And we just were not aligned anymore.”

McNearney’s comments come amid ongoing public criticism of Trump by her husband, Jimmy Kimmel, who has frequently mocked the president on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and in other appearances.
