Disney is preparing an unusual trailer strategy for Avengers: Doomsday, and it will be tied directly to Avatar: Fire and Ash.

According to industry sources, movie theaters will not be playing just one trailer for the next Avengers film. Instead, four different trailers will be rotated over several weeks.

Sources say each Avengers: Doomsday trailer will run for one week only. After that, theaters will switch to the next version. This means audiences who see Avatar: Fire and Ash on opening weekend will watch a different Avengers trailer than those who attend a week later. The rollout appears designed to encourage Marvel fans to return to theaters multiple times.

The plan has been circulating in industry circles for about a month and was later confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. Disney is reportedly sending theaters all four trailers in advance with instructions on when to change them. Marvel Studios has declined to comment on the strategy.

The rotating trailers will be attached to Avatar: Fire and Ash, the next film in James Cameron’s Avatar series. The movie is the sequel to Avatar: The Way of Water and the third entry in the franchise. Cameron directed the film and co-wrote the script with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, based on a story developed with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno.

The cast includes returning stars such as Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, and several others. New cast members include Oona Chaplin and David Thewlis. The film was shot alongside The Way of Water in New Zealand, with production beginning in 2017 and wrapping at the end of 2020. The long timeline was partly due to the complex underwater filming technology used for the series.

With an estimated budget of around $400 million, Avatar: Fire and Ash ranks among the most expensive films ever made. The movie had its world premiere in Hollywood on December 1, and is set to release in U.S. theaters on December 19. Two more sequels, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, are already planned for release in 2029 and 2031.
