Taylor Swift Made Simu Liu’s Engagement Extra Special
Simu Liu made his engagement to Allison Hsu even more unforgettable with a surprise from Taylor Swift. The Shang-Chi star revealed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on December 15 that he asked Swift to send a congratulatory video to Hsu after he proposed in Paris.
“I’ll preface this by saying my fiancée works in music, so she’s a digital marketing executive, and she grew up a Swiftie. She loves Taylor Swift,” Liu said. He explained that Swift’s songs played an important part in the early stages of their relationship.
“Taylor Swift’s songs and her music, that was a big part of the beginning of our relationship, was getting to know her through those songs, and why they meant so much to her.”
Liu thought having Swift send a personal message would make the moment extra special. “I was like, ‘Well, there’s one person that would make this engagement so special,’ and I reached out — as if we’re BFFs, no I mean I met her a couple of times, she’s fantastic — I reached out to Taylor through her publicist and I said, ‘Hey, is there any way that I could convince you to make like a two-second video just to say congrats?'”
“And she literally two days later sent it over, and I was able to play it for her. And so Taylor Swift was the cherry on top.”
Hsu was deeply moved by the video. “She was really emotional before and then when I played that video, she just completely lost it,” Liu recalled.
The couple announced their engagement on Instagram on May 11. Liu praised Swift as “absolutely just fantastic” and “so nice and so sweet.” Both Liu and Hsu are longtime fans of the singer.
Liu has shared moments from attending Swift’s Eras Tour with Hsu and even referenced her and Travis Kelce in a Valentine’s Day Instagram post after the Super Bowl, highlighting their shared admiration for the pop star.
During his hosting of the 2024 People’s Choice Awards, Liu also made it clear that he has been a Swift fan for years. He joked about Swift’s Eras Tour movie, saying, “I was a Swiftie long before I was Ken. Okay? Just wanted to be super clear where my loyalties lay. I’m a 1989 baby so Taylor and I, we’re bonding.”
