James Cameron recently shared his picks for both his favorite action movie and the greatest Christmas movie during an appearance on Stephen Colbert. The acclaimed director did not hesitate when answering.

“No, I know the answer to this. It’s Die Hard. Right? Die Hard. It’s best one liner, best villain death, best Christmas movie,” Cameron said.

Since its release, Die Hard has been re-evaluated by critics and is now considered one of the best action films ever made.

One reason for its lasting impact is the way it presents John McClane, played by Bruce Willis, as a flawed and vulnerable hero, unlike the invincible, muscle-bound characters typical of the genre at the time. Analysts have also discussed the film’s deeper themes, including masculinity, revenge, gender roles, and American concerns about foreign influence.

The film’s Christmas setting is a key reason it is frequently called a Christmas movie. The story takes place during a holiday office party, complete with Christmas decorations, music, and a festive atmosphere. Many fans and critics argue that its action-packed plot still fits comfortably within the Christmas season, even if it is unconventional.

Despite some debate over whether an action thriller belongs in the holiday movie category, Die Hard has earned a place in many “best Christmas movie” lists, and Cameron clearly agrees with that view.
