Duffer Brothers Hint a New ‘Stranger Things’ Spin-Off Is Already in the Works
Stranger Things may be ending, but the story might not be over just yet. The creators of the hit Netflix series are now teasing that another project set in the same universe could be on the way.
Matt and Ross Duffer spoke about the future of the franchise in a recent interview with ScreenRant, where they discussed the final stretch of season 5 and what comes next. While they made it clear that the main show is wrapping up for good, they also hinted that a spin-off idea is still being talked about.
According to Matt Duffer, the final episodes aim to tie up the biggest questions fans have had for years. He said the goal was to fully explain the characters’ journeys and the mystery behind the Upside Down.
“We tried as much as possible to answer all the questions as it relates to the characters and mythology of Hawkins in the Upside Down,” he explained. “We’re really closing the door and all that.”
At the same time, he confirmed that a separate project exists, even if details are still limited. Matt stressed that this potential spin-off would not simply continue the main story. “The spinoff, it relates in some ways, but it really is a completely different story and a completely different location with completely different actors and characters,” he said. “So it’s its own. It’s really its own entity.”
The final season has raised the stakes even higher. Characters like Max and Holly have been trapped in Vecna’s twisted mental world, while the true nature of the Upside Down and its link to other dimensions has come into focus. As Hawkins faces total destruction, the characters are preparing for one last stand against Vecna and his plan to merge worlds.
There have been past rumors about a possible spin-off centered on Nancy Wheeler, but Matt Duffer’s comments suggest any new show could move far beyond familiar faces and locations. A fresh setting and new characters would allow the universe to grow without undoing the ending of the main series.
The Duffer Brothers have also signed a new multi-year deal with Paramount, which adds even more questions about where their focus will go next. For now, it sounds like they want to let Stranger Things end properly before jumping back in.
