Melissa Barrera is stepping into a new chapter of her career, and she’s doing it with her signature mix of courage, talent, and passion. In a recent interview with ¡Hola! magazine, the Mexican actress reflected on her latest work in the spy thriller series The Copenhagen Test, now streaming on Peacock, and how her life and career have evolved over the years.

Speaking from Ciudad Obregón in Sonora, Mexico, where she was visiting her husband’s family, Barrera described this phase as less of a fresh start and more of a continuation of her journey. “It almost feels like a sequel,” she said.

“It almost feels like it was one movie. Maybe in my biopic, this will be the end of the first act. And then right now is the beginning of the second act, of the sequel.”

Born in Monterrey, Mexico, Barrera moved to the United States at 19 to pursue her career. She has consistently chosen roles that challenge her—whether on stage or screen, in musicals, horror, or drama. After playing Vanessa in In the Heights, she appeared as Sam in Scream VI, a role that showcased her intensity alongside Jenna Ortega. But her path hasn’t been without difficulties.

Barrera has openly spoken about the challenges she faced after sharing her political views publicly, which led to her departure from the Scream franchise. “It was honestly very moving and very emotional because I’ve always had an amazing family nucleus. It’s like me and my mom and my sisters, and it’s like the five of us against the world,” she said.

Family has been her anchor. When her career felt uncertain, relatives and long-time friends stepped up to support her. “I was so humbled to find that in a period where I felt that everybody was turning their backs on me,” she recalled. “The people that showed up for me in that moment, I will never forget.”

In The Copenhagen Test, Barrera plays Michelle, a spy whose identity is complex and layered. “This role was difficult because the identity of this person is such a mystery. There are so many levels of performance. At the same time, it was like acting. She’s an actor too. She’s a spy, she’s undercover, she’s acting,” Barrera explained.

She was drawn to the project not just for the role but for the opportunity to work with Simu Liu. “Simu, I’d always wanted to work with him, I’m a huge admirer of his work and him as a person too,” she added.

Barrera also described the physical demands of the role. “I love action. I love the process of training and learning choreography and stunts, and all of that,” she said. Alongside this project, she is starring in Black Tides with John Travolta, an experience she called surreal. “Insane to be in the same room as him, let alone sharing scenes with him, let alone calling him dad,” she said, praising his professionalism and generosity on set.

Beyond work, Barrera has focused on balance, spending time with family while supporting her husband, Xavier Zazueta, as he launched his butcher business in Texas. “Being an artist has always been to be a mirror to the world. And I think that we have a responsibility. And so I take mine very seriously. It’s not a burden, but it is a responsibility,” she said.

Looking ahead, Barrera plans to explore producing and continue seeking roles with meaning. She also looks forward to new family milestones, like her sister expecting a child. “I want to work, and I also want to have time for me and for my family,” she concluded.

Melissa Barrera’s journey shows resilience, talent, and dedication to both her craft and her loved ones. What do you think about her career choices and this new chapter in her life? Share your thoughts in the comments.
