It was a huge Thursday morning for movie lovers. The Academy just announced who is up for the 98th Academy Awards, and history has officially been made.

According to the announcement presented by actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman, Ryan Coogler’s vampire blockbuster Sinners shattered the all-time record. The film picked up a massive 16 nominations, which is the most any single movie has ever received.

The nominations came after a very busy few weeks in Hollywood. Many movies were fighting for a spot, but only the best made the cut. Paul Thomas Anderson’s thriller called One Battle After Another was another top competitor. It earned a spot for Best Picture and Best Director. The cast was recognized too, with acting nods going to Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn, and Teyana Taylor.

Other films also had a great morning. Chloé Zhao’s drama Hamnet scored big nominations, as did the movie Marty Supreme. Timothée Chalamet is the frontrunner for Best Actor for his role in that film. The list also included critical favorites like If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, which stars Rose Byrne.

However, there was one giant surprise. The sequel Wicked: For Good got zero nominations. The Academy completely shut out the film, meaning stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were left off the list entirely.

During the Golden Globes, several actors took home trophies that helped their chances. Winners included Chalamet, Rose Byrne, Teyana Taylor, Stellan Skarsgård for Sentimental Value, Jessie Buckley for Hamnet, and Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent.

Aside from the competition, the Academy also took time to celebrate legends with special honorary awards. Dolly Parton was given the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her charity work. She has helped give around 285 million books to children through her Imagination Library. Other Hollywood icons like Tom Cruise, Debbie Allen, and production designer Wynn Thomas received honorary awards for their long careers as well.

You can watch the winners accept their statues very soon. The 2026 Oscars are set to air on ABC on March 15. The host will be comedian Conan O’Brien, who is coming back to lead the show.
