The next chapter of Wakanda’s story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is sparking plenty of speculation as fans wait to see who will take up the Black Panther mantle.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige gave fans a little confirmation about the project during a press event for Fantastic Four: First Steps. While he didn’t reveal exactly when the new Black Panther will appear, he hinted that the creative team knows the story’s place in the larger MCU. We know [when on the timeline it is], and if he’s telling you he doesn’t, that’s perfect, Feige said, referencing director Ryan Coogler’s secretive approach.
Coogler has been planning this next chapter for several years. Discussions between the director and Feige started back in November 2022. This gave the team time to honor the wishes of the returning cast. Letitia Wright, who stepped into the Black Panther role as Shuri, explained in early 2023 that the cast needed time to regroup before returning to Wakanda for the next big story.
One exciting potential addition to the film is Denzel Washington. Rumors of his involvement began in 2024, and Coogler confirmed them during a June interview with Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson. I’m dying to work with Denzel and I’m hoping we can make that happen, Coogler said. He added, I got every intention of working with him in that movie and as long as he’s interested — it’s going to happen. The director called Washington a living legend and a great mentor who has been looking out for us.
As for T’Challa, the late Chadwick Boseman’s character, Marvel has been careful about recasting. Nate Moore, Marvel’s VP of Production and Development, said there are currently no plans to recast the role. He explained that the team’s focus has been on other aspects while Coogler completed his latest film, Sinners. Serious talks about the next Black Panther film haven’t even started, Moore told reporters.
Fans can now wonder not only who will become the new Black Panther in Avengers: Secret Wars, but also whether Denzel Washington will join the cast. Marvel’s creative team seems determined to balance fresh faces with legendary talent.
