How Robert de Niro Almost Died on the of This Movie During a Dangerous Scene
Robert De Niro is widely celebrated for his unparalleled commitment to his roles, but few moments in his storied career were as physically perilous as a specific stunt on the set of the 1978 masterpiece The Deer Hunter.
During the film’s harrowing Vietnam sequence, De Niro and co-star John Savage were required to perform a jump from a helicopter into the River Kwai, a feat they repeated fifteen times over two days. However, one particular take nearly turned fatal when the helicopter’s runners became ensnared in the metal cables of a bridge.
Reflecting on the terrifying ordeal in 1989, De Niro explained that the pilot had been hesitant to fly too low due to the treacherous, rocky terrain and the narrow, rushing waterway. He recalled that the helicopter unintentionally began to lift the whole bridge and twist it while he and Savage were still dangling from the structure.
Realizing the immediate danger of the situation, De Niro looked down at the churning water and shouted for Savage to drop, leading both men to plunge into the river just as the situation spiraled out of control.
Upon surfacing, the actors saw a member of the stunt crew heroically climbing onto the bridge to manually detach the cable from the helicopter’s runner. De Niro confessed to Playboy that at that moment, he truly believed that was it for both of them.
The tension of the real-life accident was so palpable that director Michael Cimino actually kept the footage of the actors screaming at the pilot in the final cut of the movie. De Niro noted that the proximity of the hovering aircraft made him fear it would drop down on us, a grim reminder of the unpredictable nature of film production.
As of February, Robert De Niro remains a remarkably prolific force in the industry, even as he celebrates more than eight decades of life. He recently made headlines for his dual role in the gangster epic The Alto Knights, where he portrayed rival crime bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello.
While the film had a challenging start at the box office, it has recently found a massive second life on streaming platforms, with viewers praising De Niro’s ability to disappear into two distinct, warring personalities simultaneously.
The legendary actor is also preparing for a highly anticipated return to comedy in the fourth installment of the Meet the Parents franchise, titled Focker In-Law. Scheduled for release on November 25, the film reunites De Niro with Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Blythe Danner, while introducing Ariana Grande to the ensemble as a new addition to the chaotic family dynamic.
Grande recently spoke about the amazing experience of working with the icon, describing him as the greatest of all time and a figure who felt like a part of her own family. In addition to his acting work, De Niro is currently producing a feature-length documentary titled The Past Goes Fast, which explores his personal history and the life of his father.
Do you think the raw, unscripted terror captured in The Deer Hunter makes the film more impactful, or should the production have prioritized the actors’ safety over the final shot? Share your thoughts in the comments.
