Brad Pitt’s Formula 1 blockbuster is officially getting a sequel, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed to the BBC. The original film, which co-stars seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton as a co-producer, was a huge hit and earned four Oscar nominations, including best picture. Pitt, 62, plays Sonny Hayes, a veteran driver returning to the F1 circuit with the fictional APXGP team after years away.

Fans have been speculating about a follow-up since the film’s release last summer, but no official word had come until now. During Apple TV’s recent press day, audience questions about a sequel prompted Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali to tell fans to “stay tuned” for future updates.

Bruckheimer later confirmed directly, saying, “We’re working on a sequel.” He did not provide a release date or confirm whether Pitt will reprise his role but added that he would “of course” have input on casting decisions.

The first F1 film was a massive success, grossing $630 million worldwide, making it Apple Original Films’ biggest theatrical release to date. The production included extensive filming during the 2023 and 2024 Formula 1 seasons, capturing real race weekends, including the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Speaking to the BBC, Bruckheimer reflected on the film’s long journey to the big screen. “It was a long journey to get the movie made because we had to endure a couple of strikes – but in the end, the movie entertained audiences around the world,” he said. “I never worked with Brad Pitt before and it’s really a thrill to work with Brad.”

He also expressed surprise and delight at the film’s awards recognition.

Bruckheimer, who was last nominated for Top Gun: Maverick, shared that he has several major projects in the works. These include Heat 2, another Days of Thunder film, a new Top Gun movie, and another Pirates of the Caribbean installment. He also hinted at a “very interesting” UFO project. “We’ve got a lot of things in the hopper. We’re just waiting for one of them to get a great script and get it made,” he said.

On the topic of Hollywood’s changing landscape, Bruckheimer discussed studio mergers, AI, politics, and production cuts. Despite the challenges, he remains optimistic about the future of film. “When they say the theatres are dying, it’s because of us. Because we haven’t given things that people want to see,” he said.

With F1 already a global hit and a sequel confirmed, fans can expect more high-speed action and drama in the years to come.

Sequel has huge potential, especially with Pitt returning and the same team behind it. F1 captured both the thrill of racing and emotional depth, which is a rare combination in blockbuster films. I’m curious to see how they’ll top the first movie. What do you think about an F1 sequel? Share your thoughts in the comments.
